Hartford Radio: Will Marotti Leaves PM Drive On WTIC

Will Marotti
The Rev. Will Marotti has hung up his WTIC 1080 AM mic.

The pastor of Meriden’s New Life Church, who returned as host of the CBS radio afternoon program slot in the wake of buddy and former governor John Rowland’s resignation from the station last April, has stepped down from the show.

Marotti’s last day was Wednesday, according to the Harford Courant.

WTIC sports commentator and on-air personality Joe D’Ambrosio will be taking over the program for an interim period effective Monday.

“Pastor Will had church and family obligations and had done a good job filling in,” said operations manager Steve Salhaney who oversees the four CBS Radio Hartford stations including WTIC.   “The plan in the spring was Pastor Will would just be filling in on a temporary basis.”

Marotti and Rowland teamed up in 2010 with their prime time 3 to 6 p.m. talk show “State and Church.” Marotti bowed out of the show in 2012 because of church and family obligations, occasionally coming on as a guest of filling in as needed.

But when Rowland was accused in a campaign finance scheme and left the station in April, Marotti returned as the temporary host.

Rowland, who was eventually convicted, is now awaiting sentencing.

Facebook To 'Geo-Fence' You And Your Friends

On Monday, Facebook announced a new advertising tool that offers marketers more of what they’ve been craving — location-based targeting.

CMO Today reports that the so-called “geofencing” ad offering, which Facebook is calling “Location Aware Ads,” lets marketers pull location information from users’ smartphones in order to serve them targeted ads.

Put simply: You’re strolling down the block, blissfully ignoring passersby and “don’t walk” signs as you flip through Facebook. Suddenly, you see a local coffee shop’s ad in your stream. “Look to your left,” it reads. “50% off mochas today… treat yourself!”

Game-changer, right?

The fact is, while a handful of companies exist in the mobile-location-targeting space, nobody has really nailed it yet, making the entry of Facebook all the more interesting. Marketers are obviously hungry for this tool. The question, as usual,  is whether consumers will find it creepy.

You can always prevent Facebook from tracking your location, through a setting on your phone

Survey: Pew Releases News IQ Data

The latest Pew Research Center News IQ quiz measures the public’s awareness of key facts in the news: from questions about conflicts around the world to the current minimum wage and the chair of the Federal Reserve. (Take the quiz yourself: Click Here)

The survey finds that a large majority (73%) is able to correctly identify the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour (from a list of other amounts ranging from $5.25 to $12.50).

In addition, amid ongoing U.S.-led airstrikes against Islamic militants in the Middle East, 67% can identify Syria as one of the countries in which the militant group known as ISIS currently controls territory (from a list that included Pakistan, Kuwait and Egypt). And 60% know that Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union; the other choices were Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Scandinavia.
Older adults generally demonstrate higher levels of news knowledge than younger Americans, and there are age divides across several of the questions asked on the survey.

However, young adults are more familiar with the federal minimum wage ($7.25 an hour) than are adults 30 and older: 82% of those under 30 can select the correct minimum wage compared with smaller majorities of older adults.

The Clevelands Cavaliers have signed a second iHeartMedia powerhouse to serve as the official broadcast home of Cavaliers basketball.

Report: NBC Wanted Jon Stewart For MTP

Jon Stewart
NBC was looking to shake up the stodgy Sunday morning news shows landscape by trying earlier this year to get The Daily Show's Jon Stewart to be their new host of Meet the Press, New York magazine reported yesterday (October 8th).

The report cited an unnamed source who said that NBC was prepared to offer Stewart anything he wanted, saying, "They were ready to back the Brink's truck up."

Stewart's Daily Show formula of funny but biting critiques of current events, politics and the media, along with sometimes tough interviews of political figures, has a loyal and young audience, who NBC was hoping might follow Stewart to Sunday mornings.

But in the end, Stewart declined, and NBC promoted Chuck Todd from within to the hosting job, which he began last month.

It's not the first time NBC tried recruiting him. According to sources, NBC Entertainment courted Stewart several years ago for a 10 p.m. variety show (the slot ultimately went to Jay Leno).

Jay Leno, CNBC Deal In the Works

Jay Leno is making another bid for primetime success, this time with a series that is close to being approved at CNBC, according to Variety.

The latenight veteran is expected to host a program focused on his love of cars, this person said. Leno’s publicist, Richard Guttman, and CNBC declined to comment.

Leno this time burnish his hobby. He has long been known to enjoy collecting cars. The deal is not finalized, but looks promising, this person said.

CNBC, which is best known for its daily coverage of business and the markets, has been making more strides in primetime as of late. The network has found ratings growth by airing reruns of ABC’s “Shark Tank” as well as reality series like “The Profit” and “Restaurant Startup.” CNBC has struggled in the time period in the past, testing everything from talk shows hosted by Dennis Miller and John McEnroe, to documentaries made by its business-news staffers.

Westwood One, Benztown Extend Rep Deal

Charles Steinhauer
Westwood One has  announced it has signed a multi-year extension with imaging powerhouse Benztown, which provides radio imaging, voiceover, programming and jingles to Westwood One and to Cumulus' owned and affiliated stations.

In 2011, Cumulus and Benztown signed an exclusive agreement that created one of the industry’s largest collections of production and imaging libraries.

Under the new agreement, Westwood One will manage affiliation and advertising sales for all Benztown production and imaging libraries and Benztown will direct production of the network’s library offerings. Additionally, Westwood One will manage affiliate and advertising sales for Benztown’s voiceover services available to stations for barter and will serve as exclusive ad sales representation for select Benztown Radio Networks programs, including The Storm Report, The Old Farmers Almanac Report, The Todd N Tyler Radio Empire, Round Trip with Dave-O, and Vipology. The 20 production libraries include Benztown’s AC, HOT AC, CHR, Country, Urban, Rhythmic, Classic Hits, Rock, News/Talk, SpeakerToyz, SpeakerToyz AC, Sports and JACK, and Westwood One’s branded libraries Adrenaline, Ambush, Horsepower, Goldmine, Avalanche, Clique and Turbulence. Libraries from both companies remain market exclusive, but with the majority of formats, there is more than one production service from which to choose, creating an alternative product in markets where one library is already utilized.

Dave Denes
Westwood One will direct affiliation and advertising sales for Benztown’s industry-leading voiceover services, which include more than 100 premium voiceover talents available to stations on a barter basis. Westwood One will also represent Benztown’s imaging group, Benztown Branding, which currently serves over 1900 broadcast radio stations and digital services worldwide with custom voiceover and imaging services across all formats, including commercial voiceover, copywriting and jingles services.

"Benztown is a natural fit for us," adds Charles Steinhauer, Westwood One's COO. "Their imaging products and production resources are creative, top-notch, and always ahead of the curve.  Benztown powers our stations with optimal branding and real  presence in the marketplace.  We look forward to working with Chachi and his team for years to come."

Dave "Chachi" Denes, Benztown President said: "If you're in the tech field you want to work with Apple. If you're in the fashion industry you want to work with Louis Vuitton. If you're in the audio content business you want to work with Westwood One. Lew Dickey, John Dickey, Mike McVay, Charles Steinhauer, Dennis Green, and Steve Shaw work with the best content producers on the planet and we're honored to be part of the team."

NYC Radio: Patty Steele Returns, Talks With Dr. Oz

Patty Steele
Scott Shannon in the Morning on WCBS 101.1 FM welcomed back the heart of the crew this week when Patty Steele returned to the team.

Patty was on medical leave for several weeks after discovering a lump on her breast which turned out to be cancerous. Patty underwent surgery to remove the malignant tissue and is 100% cancer-free.

Patty’s return comes at the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the show had Dr. Oz on to discuss the importance of checking and early detection.

“A lot of women don’t realize this, but young women generally find the lump themselves, it’s not with lomography,” says Dr. Oz. “They actually examine themselves and feel something that’s not normal.”

This was exactly how Patty discovered the lump she had in her breast weeks ago.

“I do it pretty regularly, but also because there’s no family history for me of any kind of cancer,” says Patty. “It wasn’t something that was really on my radar and I felt it and didn’t think about it until I happened to go into my regular doctor who said, ‘Let’s do some testing here.’ And that’s how we found it.”

Dr. Oz
Patty, like many women, generally don’t think about such things, especially if there is no history of cancer in the family.

“You think it’s not going to be you because there’s no family history,” adds Patty. “But what you find out… 90% of cases are not genetically predisposed.”

Listen to Dr. Oz and Patty discuss the importance of early detection plus other topics that will be on the Dr. Oz show this week.

Go to nationalbreastcancer.org for more information about early detection, breast cancer educational resources.

October 9 In Radio History

In 1890...Aimee Semple McPherson was born. She was a Pentecostal evangelist and radio preacher.

In 1935...the "Cavalcade of America" was first broadcast on he CBS Radio Network.

In 1943...The radio fantasy series "Land of the Lost," starring Betty Jane Tyler and Ray Ives, began its five-year run, first on the ABC Blue Network, then on the Mutual Broadcasting System for a year beginning in 1945, and back to ABC until the final broadcast in July 1948.

In 1962...The BBC bans Bobby "Boris" Pickett's hit "Monster Mash," feeling the subject matter -- comical as it is -- may be deemed grotesque or otherwise tasteless to some listeners

In 1967...Legendary New York DJ Murray The K is fired from station WOR-FM, where he had moved to take advantage of the new free-form format of FM radio, when the station's new owners decided to move to a set playlist.  He was fired because of his "inability to live with direction."

When WOR switched to the tighter Drake format where DJ's weren't allowed to pick the music and talk as much, Murray the K left New York radio to host programs in Toronto - on CHUM 1050 AM -and on WHFS 102.3 FM in Bethesda, MD in 1972. He returned to New York after his short stint on WHFS on the weekend show NBC Monitor and as a fill-in morning dj, and then in 1972 moved to a regular evening weekend program on WNBC radio where Don Imus was broadcasting; he was joined there by the legendary Wolfman Jack, a year later. Although it was low-key, Murray's WNBC show featured his own innovative trademark programming style, including telling stories that were illustrated by selected songs, his unique segues, and his pairing cuts by theme or idiosyncratic associations.

In early 1975, he was brought on for a brief stint at Long Island alternative rock station WLIR, and his final New York radio show ran later that year on WKTU-FM after which — already in ill health — he moved to Los Angeles. The syndicated show Soundtrack of the 60s mentioned below was heard in New York City on WCBS-FM. Gary Owens succeeded Murray as its host.

Kaufman died of cancer a week after his 60th birthday on February 21, 1982.

In 1969...BBC's Top Of The Pops refuses to play the Number One hit in the country for the first time. The song, Serge Gainsbourg's "Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus," is considered one of the first "orgasm records," that is, one of the first to feature heavy female breathing and moaning.

In 1990...radio stations around the world played "Imagine" to honor John Lennon on his birthdate. He was born in 1940 in the middle of an air raid at the Oxford Street Maternity Hospital in Liverpool, England; was shot to death in New York City on December 8, 1980.

In 2011…New York City disc jockey (WCBS-FM for parts of five decades) Bill Brown died at age 69.

In 1969, WCBS-FM traded in their easy listening 'Young Sound' format for an album rock format similar to WABC-FM (later WPLJ) and WNEW-FM. Brown was on the original airstaff.

Unfortunately, WCBS-FM did could not lay claim to sizable ratings in the New York City radio market while other stations such as WNEW-FM and WPLJ gained most of the rock n'roll radio audience. After research and several years of very low ratings WCBS-FM dropped the AOR format on July 7, 1972 at 6 AM and began playing Oldies from 1955 to then current product. Initially the station played both rock and roll songs and non rock songs of the 1950s and early 60's and only softer rock and pop hits of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Brown stayed on with the Oldies format. By the end of 1972, Brown was on the station weekdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.

In 1975, Brown also became Program Director of WCBS-FM. For a few months he gave up his midday airshift. By the end of 1976, Brown was on from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays along with his Saturday morning shift. Under Brown, WCBS-FM moved away from easy listening and began to play more 60's rock. In 1978, Brown gave up his program director position but retained his airshifts. His shift was still 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays and 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturdays.

In 1984, when Ron Lundy arrived, Brown was moved to 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. while Ron moved to the 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. slot. Harry Harrison now aired from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. (previously he was on 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.). Bill's Saturday shift was then 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. every second week. Bill Brown also continued doing voiceovers for many commercials airing on WCBS FM and other radio stations.

Brown continued on consistently from noon to 3 p.m until 2005, when his airshift was moved to 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. With his years of service, age, and retirements of other well known staffers it was speculated that his retirement was not far off.

Bill Brown remained at WCBS-FM until June 3, 2005. Although ratings were decent and the station was profitable, CBS executives abruptly laid off the entire airstaff at 4 p.m. that day. Bill Brown was the last live air personality to sign off several minutes before 4 p.m.. He came out of Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffett and played Rescue Me by Fontella Bass. It was unclear whether or not he knew the end was happening from his last statement, though he did not say a typical goodbye. His last words were, "CBS-FM 101.1, Fontella Bass... Do you ever feel the urge to just kinda scream, "RESCUE ME!?"... I'm beginning to get that feeling, here's Fontella Bass."

Brown then retired from CBS-FM after 33 years of playing oldies, as well as nearly 36 years of service. He is the only air personality to be with the station through their entire first run using live on-air personalities. He did one of their first shifts the day WCBS-FM adopted the rock format in 1969 and the very last live airshift doing oldies in 2005.

In 2012…Longtime Detroit radio and TV announcer (WWJ, WXYZ, WJR, CKLW)/Michigan Sports Hall of Famer Budd Lynch died at age 95. He was the radio voice of the Detroit Red Wings from 1949 to 1975, their public address announcer starting in 1985, and served as the team's public and community relations director.
