Report: Bobby Bones ‘On the Brink’

Bobby Bones (Tennessean)
Bobby Bones is not ashamed to admit that he's not a cowboy, and he doesn't own a belt buckle.

According to USA Today, when he hosted a Top 40 radio show in Austin, Texas, Bones said he took on criticism because he talked about country music too much for pop radio.

Now, the criticism comes from the other direction. Just like the artists Bones says he relates to the most — The Band Perry, Gloriana, Brett Eldredge — he's able to draw in a younger audience, but he's also been told he's not "country enough" for traditional country fans.

The Bobby Bones Show, which features co-hosts Amy (Brown) and Lunchbox (Dan Chappell), sounds a lot like a group of friends sitting on the patio at Jackson's Bar and Bistro in Hillsboro Village talking about whatever comes to mind — politics, current events, music. Only, the conversation is broadcast for millions of people.

And yet, despite his alternative take on country and unconventional formula, Bones stands on the brink of becoming the new voice of country music radio. He hosts three syndicated shows, anchored by the Bobby Bones Show, a weekday program that launched in February in 35 country radio markets, and soon will be in 50 markets nationwide.

Bones sits atop a competitive Nashville country morning radio market. Of the top 12 morning shows, three are country.

When The Bobby Bones Show entered the market in March, it debuted in third place in the key 25-54 demographic among country radio stations behind WKDF-FM and WSM-FM. By June, Bones' show had taken over first place and continued to extend its lead through August.

Bones, who grew up in Arkansas and Tennessee, said he takes offense when people say he's new to country music.

Bones, 33, said his show works because he and his co-hosts have diverse backgrounds.

Survey: Radio ‘Not As Good’

This year’s ListenerThink  P1 research from Mark Kassof & Co. explores the role of radio in listeners’ lives from many angles — what they think of it, its importance and the benefits of listening.

Acvcording to Kassof the results are mostly positive, but there’s some negative too.  Today, the bad news…(tomorrow, he's promises the good news)

Based on 989 online interviews with 18-64 U.S. radio listeners, conducted September 12-15, more than half  agree:

From a demographic perspective, 18-34′s are most negative — 61% agree, while only 31% disagree (and just 9% disagree strongly).  Men are, overall,  more negative than women, and 18-34 men the most negative —  67% of them agree that radio is not as good as it used to be, while only 28% disagree.

In contrast, 45-54′s — both women and men – are the most supportive of radio on this question…45% agree, 50% disagree.

WD CEO Iger Sez ESPN ‘Best Days’ Lie Ahead

Robert Iger
Walt Disney chairman and CEO Robert Iger at an investor conference Tuesday discussed the outlook for Netflix, the cord cutting debate and the future of the entertainment conglomerate's sports content juggernaut ESPN.

According to THR, Iger appeared at the 22nd annual Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference in New York and was asked about cord cutting by pay TV users. "So far we don't see evidence of this occurring," he said. But he added Disney and others must ensure they are offering content that is as strong as seen in the past via the pay TV bundle. Netflix is a different offer given its focus on library content, he argued.

Iger called the current pay TV network bundle "a really good bargain" for consumers. "I think the consumer is getting a good deal" from a $75 per-month pay TV package as does the pay TV operator, which can sell customers broadband and other services.

Asked about Intel and Sony as possible new broadband video service providers, Iger said Disney is always willing to work with user-friendly platforms whether old or new – as long as they accept content licensing terms in line with Disney's content deals with traditional pay TV firms.

Asked about potential sales or acquisitions of assets, Iger said Disney many years ago sold its newspaper assets and about five years ago its radio business. Overall, he said he was very happy with the overall Disney asset portfolio and reiterated that he didn't see any major purchases on the scale of Pixar, Marvel or Lucasfilm in the near-term.

New sports program deals start kicking in for ESPN in 2014, drawing a question about the network's margin outlook. Iger said ESPN will not rest on its laurels and sees opportunities of growth despite increased competition.

He concluded that ESPN's "best times" are still ahead of it.

Cord Cutting: The New Trend in TV Watching

Mike Vorhaus, president of Frank N. Magid Associates, discusses the rise in "cord cutters," consumers who are taking advantage of the availability of high-speed Internet connections and not paying for TV.

He speaks with Jon Erlichman on Bloomberg Television's "Bloomberg West."

Roanoke Radio: 3 Daughters Media Appeals Petition To Deny

Roanoke radio company Mel Wheeler Inc. wants to buy a Lynchburg talk-radio station, but a rival company has filed an appeal with the Federal Communications Commission to try to block the deal.

Earlier this year, according to roanoke.com, Wheeler filed paperwork with the FCC to buy N/T WLNI 105.9 FM. WLNI is currently owned by Centennial Licensing LLC, based in Clemmons, N.C.

The sale was delayed, however, when the owner of 3 Daughters Media in Forest filed a challenge with the FCC.

Gary Burns
Gary Burns, president of 3 Daughters Media, contended in his Petition to Deny that if Wheeler bought WLNI, the company would exceed the number of FM stations it can own in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market under FCC rules. Burns said that if the sale were approved, it would “upset the competitive balance in the market.”

The FCC denied 3 Daughters Media’s petition in August, but Burns appealed that decision Friday.

One of Burns’ chief objections to the deal is that he believes the FCC has erred in its counting of radio stations in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market. According to FCC rules, if a market has 45 commercial and noncommercial radio stations, one company can own up to five FM stations in that market.

The FCC ruled in August that the Roanoke-Lynchburg market has exactly 45 stations, which would allow Mel Wheeler Inc. to acquire WLNI. Wheeler already owns four FM stations — K92 (WXLK-FM, 92.3), Star Country (WYYD-FM, 94.9), Q99 (WSLQ-FM, 99.1) and The Vibe (WVBE-FM, 100.1/97.7, 610 AM).
WLNI 105.9 FM 60dBu Coverage
In his appeal, however, Burns said that the FCC has miscounted the stations in this market. He said the FCC is including at least one station that “is off the air and should not be counted.” That station, WODI-AM, is licensed to Brookneal and owned by a company with an address in the Virgin Islands.

Burns also contends in his appeal that Mel Wheeler Inc. is already at its ownership limit of five FM stations. Burns argues that the two FM frequencies for The Vibe should count as separate stations, which would put Wheeler at the five-station cap. However, one of those frequencies is licensed to Montgomery County, which the FCC does not include in the Roanoke-Lynchburg market.

'Fighting' TV Weatherman 'Arrested' Was Stunt

Jaff Baskin, Keith Monahan Pre-Fight photo
UPDATE 9:45AM:  Upon further review, we find out this was a staged promotional 'fight' to draw attention to a weekend festival in Little Rock. The source is a local satirical 'news' website and obviously was 'in' on it.

Original Posting...

Little Rock TV Weathermen Jeff Baskin of FOX 16 and Keith Monahan of KARK were arrested along with several members of their news stations late Monday night after a fight broke out between the two outside of their studio.

According to rockcitytimes.com, witnesses say the disagreement began during show prep for Baskin’s weather segment on the 9 o’clock newscast for Fox16. Monahan entered the weather center the two stations share while Baskin was reviewing his forecast and having mascara applied.

Monahan reportedly asked Baskin what he was going to show for the rain chances on Saturday. Baskin replied that he thought the rain would hold off and move in on Sunday. The two exchanged a few further remarks and walked away.

During Baskin’s forecast later in the Fox16 newscast he explained the rain chances for the weekend by saying “Saturday should be an absolutely beautiful day for those of you participating in the Big Dam Bridge 100 bike race. Unlike what other community college educated meteorologist will tell you, the rain should hold off until midday Sunday where we will have a 40% chance at showers and isolated thunderstorms.”

Monahan took a jab back at Baskin’s comments during his KARK forecast saying “Pay no attention to what some cajun who has married all 5 of his cousins at some point says, pack your ponchos this Saturday because we are going to see a 50% chance of rain starting in the afternoon Saturday and ending well before Sunday.”

After the KARK broadcast Monahan returned to his desk to find a note from Baskin that said “Meet me by the flag pole out front.”

The two were seen fighting in front of the building around 11:15 p.m. and were quickly joined by other members of their broadcast teams. Capitol police quickly responded to the incident and began arresting many fight participants.

The 36-year-old rapper with the notoriously larger-than-life ego made more claims about his genius and pretty much laid into the entire entertainment industry in a mind-blowing interview with BBC Radio 1 personality Zane Lowe, according to the NY Daily News.

"Rap is the new rock 'n' roll," West said.

"We the new rock stars, and I'm the biggest of all of them. I'm the No. 1 rock star on the planet."

Miley Makes The Cover of The Rolling Stone

Miley Cyrus has made it abundantly clear — she's a good girl gone bad.

In yet another stripped down photo shoot, the former Disney darling bares her birthday suit and famous tongue for the Oct. 10 issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

According to the NY Daily News,  the 20-year-old "We Can't Stop" singer is seen leaning up against the edge of a pool completely nude with her arms folded barely covering her cleavage.

The risqué image gives the illusion that she just took a skinny-dipped swim as her hair is wet and black eyeliner is smeared under her eyes.

Report: Clean Sweep for NBC on Opening Monday

NBC opened the season with a clean Monday sweep, with “The Blacklist” at 10 p.m. the top premiering series (drama, comedy or reality) since the launch of the net’s “Revolution” on the less competitive Sept. 17, 2012. It averaged 12.62 million viewers and a 3.8 rating/10 share among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m., based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen.

And, according to Marc Berman at Media Insights, it outdelivered the debut of competing CBS crime solver “Hostages” (Viewers: 7.49 million, A18-49: 1.8/ 5) by a hefty 5.13 million viewers and 111 percent in the demo.

The season-premiere of lead-in “the Voice,” meanwhile, had its best premiere – 14.66 million viewers, A18-49: 4.9/13 from 8-10 p.m. – since the post-“Super Bowl” start of the singing competition on Feb. 5, 2012.

In other series-debuting news, CBS sitcom “Mom” was thwarted by the sluggish third season return of “2 Broke Girls,” with 7.29 million viewers (#4) and a 2.5/ 6 in the demo (#3) at 9:30 p.m. (out of 8.76 million and a 2.8/ 7 among adults 18-49 for “2 Broke Girls”).

But, according to Berman,  Fox was no slouch in the 9 p.m. hour care of episode two of drama “Sleepy Hollow,” which is a double-digit percent improvement over failed year-ago occupant “The Mob Doctor.” It averaged 8.56 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 3.1/ 8 in the demo.

Report: iTunesRadio Outpacing Pandora

Apple gloated a little Monday when it announced iTunes Radio had notched more than 11 million unique listeners in the first five days since its September 18 launch on iOS 7 and the desktop iTunes software.

According to cnet.com, that figure is nearly four times the number of unique listeners that Rhapsody -- the subscription-based music service that pioneered streaming when launched in 2001 -- had in July, according to ComScore. Rhapsody's unique listeners numbered just 2.89 million in that month.

So much for first-mover advantage, writes Joan E. Solsman at cNet.

This pace of iTunes Radio listener growth -- 11 million in five days -- also puts it on track to surpass the current leader of Internet radio in less than 30 days.

Pandora, by far the biggest streaming radio service, had 64.9 million unique listeners in July, compared with 20.2 million for No. 2 Spotify, 14.4 million for iHeartRadio, and 5.4 million for Slacker.

If Apple can keep up its momentum, it will have 66 million unique listeners in 30 days post-launch.

Tampa Radio: Todd Schnitt Wants His Money Back

Todd Schnitt
DUI Charge Was A Set-Up

WFLA 970 AM PM Drive host Todd "MJ" Schnitt and his former attorney Phil Campbell were in court Monday, with Schnitt suing Campbell for legal malpractice.

According to myfoxtampabay.com, Schnitt paid Campbell's firm $1 million for legal services, but he owes another million and is refusing the pay.

Plus, Schnitt wants his first $1 million back.

This all stems from Campbell's DUI arrest in January during Schnitt's trial against Bubba the Love Sponge, which Schnitt lost.

Prosecutors eventually dropped the charges, saying it was all set up, but Schnitt claims the bogus arrest affected his attorney's credibility.

Consumer Trust In Ads Rises

Ads on radio have gained consumer trust

Whether it’s advertising via old standbys like TV, newspapers and radio or newer media like mobile and online, earning consumer trust is the holy grail of a successful campaign, according to Nielsen’s latest Trust In Advertising report.

The good news for advertisers is that consumers around the globe are more trusting now than they were several years ago. In fact, the study reveals that trust in online advertising is increasing, as is trust in ads on TV, radio and movie screens.

Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and family, often referred to as earned advertising, are still the most influential, as 84 percent of global respondents across 58 countries to the Nielsen online survey said this source was the most trustworthy.

Tom's Take: Nielsen also announced plans to retire the Arbitron brand, starting next week.  Deal with it.

Report: Pandora ‘Thumped’ By iTunes Radio

Apple Inc.’s announcement Monday that it already has 11 million unique listeners for its new iTunes Radio service appeared to have an impact on Pandora Media as the leading Internet radio company’s shares slid almost 11% Monday.

According to Rex Crum at Marketwatch, Pandora’s stock gave up $2.73 a share, or 10%, to close at $24.26 as investors turned against the company following Apple’s news about iTunes Radio, which came out prior to the start of trading.

However, analysts who cover Pandora were mostly surprised at that reaction to Apple’ iTunes Radio update, which the company made at the same time it said it sold 9 million iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S phones over the first three days the new iPhones were on sale.

“All the Apple stuff is pretty old news and should have been anticipated,” said Michael Pachter, of Wedbush Securities. “People are likely to check iTunes Radio out, but it is not going to be as good as Pandora for most, so [the stock decline] should be a transitory impact.”

While Apple’s 11 million active listeners is still a far cry from the 72.1 million listeners that Pandora reported in August, a figure that was up 28% from a year ago, Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan said the immediate impact from iTunes Radio on Pandora hints at large market-share losses for the company.

Rohan said approximately 50% of Pandora’s users access the service via one of Apple’s iOS-based devices, and that the data from Apple “enables us to estimate that Apple’s entry into streaming radio will reduce Pandora’s current listening hours by 10% to 15% over the coming four to six months.”

In August Pandora reported 1.35 billion listening hours for the month, up 16% from a year ago.
