Philly Radio: Scott Masteller to Retire From Beasley' Fanatic

Scott Masteller, program director of Beasley Media Group’s 97.5 The Fanatic (WPEN-FM) in Philadelphia, will retire Dec. 31, ending a radio career of more than 45 years.

Masteller has programmed the sports-talk station since January 2024 after earlier consulting the brand. In that span he helped reset the station’s strategy, reshape its weekday lineup, and coach key hosts. Beasley said it will work with him to name a successor.

“Scott has brought tremendous knowledge, thoughtful leadership and a deep commitment to excellence to ‘The Fanatic,’” said Beasley Philadelphia vice president and market manager Paul Blake. “He understands what makes sports radio meaningful to its audience and has always been generous in sharing his insight with those around him.

Scott was key in The Fanatic’s growth, and he helped position the station well for its next chapter. We are deeply grateful for Scott’s contributions and congratulate him on an outstanding career and a well-earned retirement.”

Beasley chief content officer Justin Chase said Masteller strengthened the station during an important stretch and that the company is grateful he will help identify the next programmer.

A veteran of spoken-word radio, Masteller spent seven years as program director of Hearst’s WBAL NewsRadio in Baltimore, where he also built and managed radio networks for the Orioles, Ravens, and Navy football. Before that he spent 13 years at ESPN, launching ESPN 103.3 in Dallas-Fort Worth and later serving as senior director of radio content at the network’s Bristol, Connecticut, headquarters.

Earlier programming stops included Portland, Salt Lake City, and Lexington, Kentucky. He had stepped back from day-to-day programming before returning to take the Philadelphia job, a market he had long wanted to work in. The Fanatic competes in one of the country’s most intense sports-radio markets as Beasley prepares the station’s next chapter.
