Radio One Buffalo, owned by Buddy Shula, has agreed to acquire WHLD-AM 1270, a Niagara Falls, NY-based station, from Cumulus Media for $150,000, marking its second AM signal in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls market.
The deal includes a Local Marketing Agreement (LMA) effective June 1, 2025, allowing Radio One Buffalo to operate WHLD pending FCC approval.
This acquisition expands Radio One Buffalo’s portfolio, which already includes WECK-AM 1230, known as “The BIG WECK,” a classic hits/oldies station, and three FM translators in Buffalo, plus WKEY-FM 93.7 in Key West, FL, branded as “Yacht Rock Key 93.7.”
WHLD-AM, licensed to Niagara Falls, has been a conservative talk station since 2021, airing syndicated Westwood One programs like The Dan Bongino Show, The Ben Shapiro Show, and The Mark Levin Show. It previously operated as a sports talk station, “Sports Radio 1270 The Fan,” and has a history of varied formats, including adult standards and urban gospel. The station broadcasts at 5,000 watts daytime and 1,000 watts at night, using a five-tower directional antenna in Hamburg, NY, and serves the Buffalo-Niagara Falls area.

Shula expressed enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating it will enhance Radio One Buffalo’s reach and impact, similar to the 2016 purchase of WECK-AM for $655,000, which transformed the local radio landscape.
Cumulus Media had planned to take WHLD silent in March 2025 before opting to sell. The move aligns with Cumulus’s broader strategy, having acquired WHLD in 2011 as part of a Citadel Broadcasting deal.
