6/17 WAKE-UP CALL: Business Warming Up To Trump

A range of chief executives are flocking to meet Donald Trump again after seeing the chance of a victory by the former president, and are listening carefully as he promises more tax cuts. Business leaders like Jamie Dimon and Brian Moynihan, who historically avoid making endorsements, have shown signs of warming to Trump’s policies or spoken out about Biden’s. Businesses have largely thrived under Biden's administration, with high stock prices and corporate profits, but the FTC has been among the most aggressive in recent years, trying to block mergers and rein in giant companies.

➤OBAMA LEADS BIDEN OFF-STAGE BY HAND: President Biden appeared to freeze up on stage and had to be led off by Barack Obama at the conclusion of a star-studded campaign fundraiser in Los Angeles Saturday night. The awkward moment took place after Biden and his predecessor sat for a 45-minute interview with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel at the Peacock Theater. As the men stood for applause, Biden’s gaze seemed to become fixed on the crowd for a full 10 seconds until former President Barack Obama took his wrist and led him offstage.

➤SOUTHWEST EXPENSES BALLOONING: Southwest became the biggest U.S. airline by doing things its own way. Trouble is, that’s no longer working. The airlines’ expenses have ballooned and profit margins lag behind some rivals’. Southwest is backtracking on pieces of an aggressive expansion strategy at a time when Americans are booking more flights than ever. To boost its finances, the airlines is looking at making some big changes, like assigning seats, revamping boarding, and offering extra-legroom rows for a fee. It has even started listing fares on Google Flights, a site it used to avoid to drive customers to its own website and app.

➤ISRAEL 'PAUSING' FIGHTING:  Israel is pausing fighting along a route in southern Gaza to let in aid. Israel said it would halt fighting along a strategic route that begins at Israel’s Kerem Shalom crossing into the enclave each day during daylight hours until further notice to help the distribution of humanitarian aid. This is the first time Israel has announced a daily pause in fighting in certain areas of Gaza since November. Still, the army said fighting elsewhere in the southern city of Rafah and the rest of the enclave would continue.


➤BIBI CRITICAL OF PAUSES: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized plans announced by the military on Sunday to hold daily tactical pauses in fighting along one of the main roads into Gaza to facilitate aid delivery into the Palestinian enclave. The military had announced the daily pauses from 0500 GMT until 1600 GMT in the area from the Kerem Shalom Crossing to the Salah al-Din Road and then northwards. "When the prime minister heard the reports of an 11-hour humanitarian pause in the morning, he turned to his military secretary and made it clear that this was unacceptable to him," an Israeli official said.

➤CHEF LUCKY TO BE ALIVE: Gordon Ramsay is lucky to be alive. The "Hell's Kitchen" host, 57, revealed on Saturday that he was treated at a hospital after being injured in a "really bad" bicycle accident in Connecticut. "It really shook me," he says in a video shared to Instagram and X. "Honestly, I'm lucky to be here." Ramsay wrote in the post's caption that he is "doing OK and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries," but he is "a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato." In the clip, he raises up his chef's coat to show a massive bruise that wraps around his torso.

➤PARENTS WOUNDED PROECTING KIDS:  A couple who brought their infant and toddler to a Michigan splash pad — and protected them when a deranged gunman opened fire — were among nine shooting victims at the summer attraction Saturday, loved ones confirmed. Mcayla and Eric Coughlin were both wounded protecting their 2-year-old and 7-month-old daughters when shots rang out inside the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad near their home at around 5 p.m. The husband and wife, who live in Rochester, were shot a combined seven times during the horrifying scene, a family friend said in a GoFundMe post. “Shortly after grabbing ice cream they walked to the splash pad and were not even there for a minute when Micayla and Eric heard gunfire,” the post states. “In an effort to save their children, they each grabbed a child to protect them.”

“Because of their heroic actions, their children were protected and able to go home that evening,” the family friend said on the GoFundMe page. “Micayla and Eric face a long and unknown recovery from this unthinkable tragedy.” As of Sunday night, the fundraiser has raised more than $20,000.

🎤TONY AWARDS WINNER: The Tony Awards celebrated the best of Broadway. The Outsiders, based on S.E. Hinton’s bestselling novel, won best musical, while Stereophonic won best play and the most awards of any show, with five. Hollywood names such as Daniel Radcliffe, Sarah Paulson, and Jeremy Strong also nabbed their first Tony Awards for their acting. Broadway is firmly in its pop era, as more than half of the 15 new musicals that opened during the latest season had scores credited to artists in the music business, such as Alicia Keys, Britney Spears, David Byrne, and Sufjan Stevens.


⚾DODGERS 3 ROYALS 0: Los Angeles Dodgers star shortstop Mookie Betts fractured his left hand when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning of a 3-0 victory Sunday over the visiting Kansas City Royals, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after the game. The team also said Betts won't need surgery and there is no timetable for his return. "It's just going to be rest and let the bones heal," said Roberts, calling it a big blow to the team.\

⚾ASTROS 4 TIGERS 1: Ronel Blanco tossed seven no-hit innings and Jose Altuve clubbed a three-run home run as the Houston Astros claimed the rubber match of their three-game series against the visiting Detroit Tigers with a 4-1 victory on Sunday. Blanco (7-2) continued his breakout campaign and flirted with a second no-hitter this season. He allowed two walks and recorded seven strikeouts when he no-hit the Toronto Blue Jays on April 1 and was equally dominant against the Tigers.

⚾RED SOX 9 YANKEES 1: Boston set a franchise record by stealing nine bases en route to a victory over visiting New York. David Hamilton had four of Boston's nine steals. He also had two hits and scored three times.Boston's Ceddanne Rafaela collected three hits and drove in two runs. Rafaela is 11-for-19 in his past five games. Connor Wong added a team-high three RBIs for the Red Sox. The Yankees received solo home runs from Aaron Judge and Jose Trevino. It was Judge's 26th homer of the year and Trevino's eighth.

🏌DeCHAMBEAU WINS U-S OPEN: Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 at 6-under par, one stroke ahead of McIlroy who at one point had erased the three-stroke lead with which DeChambeau started the day and was alone at the top of the leaderboard. After McIlroy missed a short putt on the 18th, DeChambeau came through with the shot of the tournament: a brilliant wedge out of the bunker to avoid bogeying the final hole himself.


➤WILD WEATHER..RECORD HEART AND SNOW: The coming week will bring weather extremes of almost every stripe to the U.S.: From a baking heat wave in the Midwest and Northeast to an unseasonable chilly start in the Pacific Northwest. And in the Rockies? Possibly snow − yes snow − in June. Scorching temperatures into the 90s are expected through the beginning of the week over the East and into the Midwest and Great Lakes region, the National Weather Service warned Sunday. It's going to be so hot in the middle and eastern part of the country that Tom Kines, a meteorologist with Accuweather, expects it will make headlines.
