Report: Rifs Continue At Google

After laying off over a thousand staff workers on its software, hardware and engineering teams working on Google Assistant, Pixel, Fitbit and Nest products, Google is now planning to make more cuts.

“Hundreds of roles” on its 30,000-person advertising sales team will soon be axed, according to MediaPost citing a spokesperson from the company.

“Every year we go through a rigorous process to structure our team to provide the best service to our Ads customers,” the company said in a statement. “We map customers to the right specialist teams and sales channels to meet their service needs. As part of this, a few hundred roles globally are being eliminated and impacted employees will be able to apply for open roles on the team or elsewhere at Google.”

Google’s layoffs were first reported by Business Insider after it received a memo from Google Senior Vice President Philip Schindler, who pointed to the company's Large Customer Sales (LCS) unit as the primary area of this round of job cuts. The LCS sells ads to large businesses.

According to the memo, Google's Customer Solutions team (GCS), which sells ads to smaller clients, will replace the LCS as the “core” ad-sales team.

Google's ad-sales restructuring was first mentioned in a December report by The Information, which mentioned the tech giant's increased dependency on machine learning and artificial intelligence to guide its customers through the ad-buying process in search, YouTube and additional services.

These automated ads, which are on track to generate tens of billions of dollars over the next year, are how Google acquires the bulk of its revenue.
