R.I.P.: John Garry, Legendary Pittsburgh Radio Personality

Pittsburgh has lost one of its legendary radio voices. John Garry of O’Brien and Garry fame has died at his home in Georgia. He was 91.

The pair were working separate shifts at WTAE in 1975 when the station paired them together for the morning show. It was an immediate success, spawning characters such as Lt. Macho and Mr Science. The pair moved to WTAE sister station WHTX in 1983, then to WMXP and finally back to WTAE in the 1990s.

Many tributes to Mr. Garry were posted on social media.

"John has been a good friend since I first met him upon his arrival at WTAE," former WTAE disc jockey and program administrator Mark Roberts posted on Facebook . "Our kids grew up together, and we spent much time with John at his pool and at the beach. We’ll all miss him greatly."

"Sorry to hear about John Garry's passing," Jack Bogut, who was pitted against O'Brien and Garry as the morning host on KDKA-AM, posted on Facebook.

"He and Larry O'Brien were great, classy and cordial competitors. We share some laughter and a few pranks over the years. It was a different time then."

Along with Larry O’Brien, Garry began working together in the mid-70s on WTAE Radio, amassing a large audience.

After moving to a few different stations, the duo was back on WTAE in the 1990s. The duo was second only behind KDKA Radio’s Jack Bogut in the ratings.
