Wake-Up Call: Indonesia Quake Kills at Least 162


 A powerful earthquake killed at least 162 people and injured hundreds on Indonesia's main island on Monday. Many of the dead were public-school students who had finished their classes for the day and were taking extra lessons at Islamic schools when they collapsed. The 5.6 magnitude quake struck Cianjur town in West Java.

➤SAUDI ARABIA EXECUTES 12 PEOPLE WITH SWORDS AFTER CROWN PRINCE PROMISED TO CUT BACK: Saudi Arabia executed 12 people in 10 days despite the Crown Prince's promise to cut down on such form of punishment. The defendants were sentenced to death after being imprisoned for non-violent drug offences. The latest figures bring the total number of people executed in Saudi Arabia to at least 132 this year, which is more than the number of Saudi executions in 2020 and 2021 combined.

➤COLORADO SPRINGS SUSPECT HAD FIREAMS DESPITE VIOLENT THREATS: Several Colorado lawmakers are asking why the state’s red-flag law wasn’t used to seize weapons from the alleged gunman in the deadly shooting at an LGBT nightclub in Colorado Springs after a prior arrest for violent threats last year. The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldrich, was arrested on murder and hate-crime charges, according to court records. Five people were killed and 19 injured when a gunman, identified by police as Mr. Aldrich, opened fire inside the nightclub late Saturday. Within minutes of the shooting, people inside the club confronted and restrained Mr. Aldrich, according to police. As of Monday, Mr. Aldrich was in custody in a local hospital receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the attack, authorities said. Law-enforcement officials said Mr. Aldrich used an AR-15-style weapon to carry out the attack at the nightclub.

➤1 DEAD, 19 INJURED AFTER SUV CRASHES INTO APPLE STORE: A man has died and 19 people were injured Monday after a black SUV crashed into the Apple store in Massachusetts. Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said there is an "active criminal investigation" into the crash, the victim was identified by law enforcement as Kevin Bradley, 65, of New Jersey. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
➤UKRAINIANS URGED TO MOVE BEFORE WINTER'S COLD:  Ukrainian authorities have begun evacuating civilians from recently liberated sections of the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, fearing that a lack of heat, power and water due to Russian shelling will make living conditions too difficult this winter. The World Health Organization concurred, warning that millions face a “life-threatening” winter in Ukraine. Authorities urged residents of the two southern regions, which Russian forces have been shelling for months, to move to safer areas in the central and and western parts of the country.
😰SOUTH POLE HITS RECORD COLD NOVEMBER TEMPERATURES: Extreme cold records continue to tumble at The South Pole continues to tumble with extreme cold records. Most recently, on November 16th, 17th and 18th, all three of those days recorded a daily record. On the 18th, the temperature plunging to –45.2°C, compared with –44.7°C on the same day back in 1987. The records follow the six-month winter of 2020-21, which was the coldest since records began in 1957.

➤GETTING READY TO RETIRE? HERE ARE CHEAPEST COUNTRIES TO RETIRE IN: As the cost of living crisis continues to hit, more and more people, particularly pensioners, are looking to live outside of the current country they live in. The cheapest countries that came out on top were the Philippines, Thailand and South Africa, which were found to have prices around half of what they are in the UK. In Europe, the cheapest place to live in is Croatia.

🦃INFLATION AND THE RISING COST OF A THANKSGIVING MEAL: Problems like inflation, supply snarls and bad weather have pushed up prices for just about everything including Thanksgiving. Overall, the ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal will cost shoppers 13.5% more this year compared to last.  Several of those items are even pricier on an individual basis, particularly turkey prices were up 24.4% year-over-year in the week ending November 6. One silver lining though, sweet potatoes and yams are up just 2.6% in the grocery store.

➤TODD AND JULIE CHRISLEY ARE SENTENCED TO PRISON IN TAX EVASION CASE:  Todd and Julie Chrisley received sentences in their tax evasion case on Monday—a week after their son, Grayson, was injured in a car crash. The pair will serve a cumulative 19 years in prison. Todd has been sentenced to 12 years and 16 months probation, while Julie was sentenced to seven years and 16 months probation. Prosecutors wrote in a memorandum last week, “The jury’s unanimous verdict sets the record straight: Todd and Julie Chrisley are career swindlers who have made a living by jumping from one fraud scheme to another, lying to banks, stiffing vendors, and evading taxes at every corner.” This comes after their son Grayson was hospitalized following a car accident last weekend. Tennessee police told TMZ Monday (November 21st) that Grayson drove into the back of a Dodge pickup truck that was stopped in standstill traffic. No arrests or charges have been made.

➤JAY LENO IS DISCHARGED FROM THE HOSPITAL AFTER EXPERIENCING SEVERE BURNS: Entertainment Tonight reports that Jay Leno left the Grossman Burn Center on Monday, after receiving treatment for third-degree burns on his face, chest, and hands. The former Tonight Show host posed for a photo with the team at Grossman before leaving the facility. Dr. Peter Grossman said in a statement, "I am pleased with Jay’s progress, and I am optimistic that he will make a full recovery."

➤STUDY: TAKING ADVIL FOR MORE THAN A YEAR MAKES ARTHRITIS WORSE:  Bad news: taking certain medications over the long-term could actually be making your arthritis pain worse. University of California researchers looked at people with moderate to severe osteoarthritis in their knees who had taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as Advil or Aleve, for at least a year. The data revealed no long-term benefits for taking NSAIDs, and that the joint inflammation and quality of knee cartilage got worse in participants who took the NSAIDS compared to participants who did not take the medications. Lead study author Johanna Luitjens says, “The use of NSAIDs for their anti-inflammatory function has been frequently propagated in patients with osteoarthritis in recent years and should be revisited, since a positive impact on joint inflammation could not be demonstrated.”
⛽U.S. GAS PRICES ON DECLINE, COULD NEAR $3 PER GALLON BY CHRISTMAS:  Gas prices are shifting in the U.S. The AAA is now saying gas prices will likely drop just in time for holiday travel. Though the AAA reported a national average retail price of $3.66 a gallon for regular unleaded gas for Monday (November 21st), prices are about 10 cents per gallon lower than the week prior. Patrick DeHaan, with GasBuddy, says many stations across the U.S. already have gas priced below $3, and “It’s not impossible that if oil markets hold there, we could see a national average of $2.99 around Christmas, certainly the gift that every motorist is hoping for”  .

🏈BRONCOS WAIVE MELVIN GORDON AFTER 5TH FUMBLE OF THE SEASON: The Broncos waived running back Melvin Gordon III on Monday after he fumbled Sunday for the fifth time this season in an overtime loss to the Raiders. Gordon fumbled at the Raiders' 2-yard line just before halftime, he played 41 games for the Broncos over the last three seasons and scored 22 total touchdowns.

🏈FALCONS TE KYLE PITTS GOES TO IR: The Atlanta Falcons will be without their star tight end Kyle Pitts for at least 4 games after being placed on injured reserve Monday, a day after he suffered a knee injury in the Falcons' 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears.

🏈RAVENS ROQUAN SMITH HANDS OUT TURKEYS IN BALTIMORE: Baltimore Ravens Roquan Smith made his presence felt in the community by handing out Thanksgiving food to Baltimore families ahead of Turkey Day. The 25-year-old showed up with his teammates at a local elementary/middle school to hand out food to 200 families. According to sources, Smith and other Ravens players used their own money to purchase turkeys and side dishes for the families to enjoy on the annual holiday.

🏀76ERS JOEL EMBIID OUT AT LEAST 2 GAMES WITH FOOT INJURY: Joel Embiid will miss at least the next two games with a left midfoot sprain he suffered during Saturday's loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The team said Embiid's status, beyond missing Tuesday's home game against Brooklyn and Wednesday's game in Charlotte, will be "reevaluated in the coming days."

⚾OLIVIA PICHARDO BECOMES FIRST WOMAN ON DI NCAA BASEBALL ROSTER: Freshman Olivia Pichardo made Brown University's baseball roster as the first woman named to a Division I NCAA baseball team. Brown announced the news on Monday after Pichardo made the cut following an open tryout. She's one of 31 players listed on the roster ahead of the spring season and will play as a utility player.
