Since he joined KDKA-TV in 1983, Smith worked extensively on the 2020 election coverage and created the weekly political segment Around the Table. He also led the station to a Mid-Atlantic Emmy Award for its coverage of the 1994 U.S. Air Flight 427 crash.
“Stacy is truly a pro’s pro. He has worked tirelessly to bring the news of the day to our Pittsburgh community,” VP and General Manager Chris Cotugno said in a prepared statement. “Stacy never stopped even though he was not in the building. He was an early adapter of Zoom as his focus shifted to reporting the business news of the day – he never had an excuse not to do something, he just did it – true professionalism.”
During his time in broadcast, Smith earned honors from the Associated Press and United Press International for his coverage of medical technologies, including of pioneering transplantation doctor Thomas Starzl and of the anniversary of the polio vaccine.Prior to his work at KDKA, Smith worked at WDAF in Kansas City, WHAS-AM/FM/TV in Louisville, WIFE-AM in Indianapolis and WLBC-AM/FM in Muncie, Indiana.
