In Chicago, media watcher Robert Feder cites sources who said the layoffs included overnight personalities on HotAC WTMX 101.9 FM and AC WSHE 100.3 FM.
VP/Market Manager Jeff England did confirm the number jobs affected, but acknowledged to Feder that there was a shift from live broadcasting to voice-tracking during post-midnight hours to save money. "As technology evolves, we have to look for ways to use it to our advantage," said England. "The difficult decision to reduce staff is an effort to remain competitive in a very challenging environment."
Among the layoffs were 35-year radio vet Mike Roberts at 101.9 The Mix and Brian Travis of WSHE. Automated overnight operations on both stations will now be handled by Greg Easterling, who also airs from midnight-5:30am on Classic Rock WDRV 97.1 FM.
In addition, sources told Feder nine other fulltime and parttime jobs were cut in programming, traffic, support and other areas.
In St. Louis, Hubbard Radio told another 11 employees of their termination. The list included KSHE program director Rick Balis, who had been at the legendary classic rock station since 1976.
Others let go Tuesday include Spencer Graves, host of WARH's morning show "Spencer's Neighborhood" since 2015; Graves' co-host Brandon "Brando" Luttman and Carl "The Intern" Middleman at KSHE.
Others let go included advertising salespeople and other off-air employees, a source said.
