Boston Radio: Jen Brien Gets Overnights At WBZ

UPDATE 10/03/13: Jen Brien
UPDATE 10/03/13: WBZ-AM has parted company with Jenn Brien. Click Here.

Jennifer “Jen” Brien has been named overnight host weeknights 12:00M-5:00AM on WBZ NewsRadio 1030 AM.

Brien’s program is entitled “The Jen Brien Show” and now airs at midnight; it was announced Tuesday by Peter Casey, WBZ NewsRadio News & Programming Director. “The Jen Brien Show” will be a mix of pop culture, current events, politics, and the comings and goings of people in New England.

Brien replaces Steve LeVeille who retired last year.

With over a decade of experience in radio, Brien joined WBZ from WRKO where she was the weekday talk host of “The Jennifer Brien Show.” She has also hosted shows on WPRO and WHJJ in Providence, and WCOD and WXTK on Cape Cod.

After LeVeille’s retirement, Brien would often fill in during the time period, and today’s announcement officially makes the “The Jen Brien Show” WBZ NewsRadio’s overnight talk show.

  4. Big big big mistake. How Morgan White Jr. did not get the gig is beyond me. He was the only one of the "fill-ins" that I would listen to all 5 hours of the overnight. His show was the closest to Larry Glicks and Norm Nathans when WBZ ruled overnight. I just can't get into the Jen Brien show-very disappointing.

    1. Morgan "lord of the snipets " and Bradley , you would be hard put to say which is more boring !!!!!! WBZ let Jen go, I as well as a few hundred people I have talked to will no longer be listening !!!!

    2. Tried to like her, but she was sophomoric; her show's were like her own public therapy sessions. Lacked variety! I could see having her on maybe two or three nights, but five nights a week was just too much. I stopped listening. Give me Bradley or Morgan any time.

  10. I do not like the show. I find her banter annoying and less than professional. HER SILLINESS WITH THE KERRY CLUB IS JUST TOO MUCH! Is this the best you could do BZ?UGH

  11. Bad bad bad choice. The woman is incapable of completing a simple sentence. Everything is a mash of sentence fragments, non sequential rants, clinches and sound effects, punctuated with the obligatory verbal pauses. Add to this it is painfully obvious she doesn't know what she is talking about.

  16. Brien is not only the worst thing to happen to major urban talk radio in recent memory (a 50KW clear channel station that is the oldest AM station in New England!), her elevation to the 5-nights-a-week overnight position bodes ill for the future of talk radio, IMHO.

    1. You have GOT to be kidding. Did she pay you to say that? She's gawd awful. Can't complete sentences. Talks in whispers. Says "hum hummm" all the time. She is a non-intellect. Terrible choice for the WBZ overnight.

  19. First time listening she talked about smoking pot with her mother. Second time listening she was riding a school bus. What an insult to Steve - making her his replacement. So --- that is what WBZ is promoting.

    1. I agree. It is insulting to all the great late night hosts who have filled that seat at WBZ radio. She is the most unprofessional person on the radio - anywhere.

Please no more UMMMMMMM, it gets old and please find another opening song, as soon as I hear it I know what is coming next. It would be nice if you stopped talking about yourself too.

  23. Jen's the best....I guarantee the naysayers (some late night at 3AM, with their transistor radio under the covers) will tune-in again, just out of curiosity. Like her predecessors....but unlike lots of other talk show hosts...she actually lets her listeners finish a sentence. You go girl! (and I'm a guy...)

    1. You are listening to a different radio show. Brien is rude, talks over people and just hangs up. She is shockingly inarticulate and unprofessional. She won't be long for WBZ. The intellectual level of the callers has dropped off a cliff due to her lack of intellectual chops. It's like listening to a nail on a blackboard if you can take even two minutes of Jen's diatribe. She is from hunger.

  24. find the show boring, I fall asleep through most of it, her comments are droll

  25. Love Jordan Rich on the weekends and now, thank you WBZ for Jen during the week. Now, contrary to a few comments I"ve read...I"M never bored. Great choice as far as I'm concerned!!!

  26. Dear Anonymous at Sept 3, 2013 at 1:46 PM - you sad soul - travel on over to the WBZ website and read the more than 300 comments that logically and intelligently critique the Jen Brien "Show" or what passes for a radio show. Then come back here and tell me what you think, because from your comment you do not understand what it means to be an overnight radio show host on the mega watt station that is WBZ. It is not for amateurs, and Brien is to put it kindly, a rank amateur, not to mention her incoherent use of the English language. Please, I ask you, I even beg you, to please tell me why you are never bored when listening to Brien...I'd love to know. None of the very few who "like" her show can explain why. Will you be the first?

    2. Yes, she's the real deal of an inarticulate mess. You sound like a professional Jen Brien "Fan". Are you so unable to properly critique the terrible job she has been doing for the last three months?? Every other loyal listener who cares about WBZ has.

  27. Please - thank goodness it's not Morgan. I have a hard time understanding him. Really like Jen. She's very down to earth!

  28. Horrible, horrible, insulting choice for the overnight talk show host. Jen is not only annoying, less than articulate and obscessed w/ herself, but seems to lack any self confidence. Why must we be subjected to her personal lack-luster life? Night after night, after night. BOOOOOOORRRING. For the first time in my life have I switched to an "all news" show, which is not very interesting either . Does she have any knowledge of current events? WBZ needs to get back to their previous level of character.

  29. jen is wonderful because she is genuine. I just love her and the show. good job girl. keep up the good work. I will be listening every night. I am hooked. later cutie.

  30. I look forward to listening to Jen every night. I enjoy her pleasant conversation and intelligent discussion of current events. I enjoy listening to her chat with her mother. I like getting to know her. But most of all I am very grateful to her service to our country.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Why are you people so negative? Jen Brien is such a nice change to WBZ. She's young, energetic, and totally different from all the rest. I think we needed a change. I can't stop listening to her show. She's down to earth and very sensitive.
    Jen, don't listen to them.

    ReplyDelete
  32. It amazes me a station with the stature and history of WBZ would have Jen Brien as an on air personality. Pretending to be open minded while making snide remarks towards callers whose opinions she doesn't care for is immature and unprofessional. She has expressed an admiration for Michele Bachmann. Jen does seem to be trying to be a composite of Bachmann and Palin.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Sorry folks, but I really like her show. She is definitely a "breath of fresh air" for a change. That's what we need to hear
during the wee hours, nothing too serious.

  36. The announcement that Ms Brien was "officially" hired as the overnight talk show host at WBZ on June 25, 2013, makes September 25th significant in that she would be up for her 12 week review. It isn't to most employees a pro forma experience but something that can be enormously helpful and at times a 'heads up' for those who are not meeting the standard. I thought it was interesting this morning when Morgan White mentioned the members of the overnight team. I got the impression that although he was filling in for "The Jen Brien Program" there were others who could be potential fill ins when Ms Brien is unable to work. I think WBZ should realize that 5 nights a week is too much for anyone. Give Bradley Jay and Morgan White the gig and ask Ms Brien if she would like to stay on and be the fill-in host for when THEY are ill or out of town.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Of course Jen is not leaving WBZ!

Jen was out for the last couple of days because she is auditioning to be one of Glen Beck's models. He's a has been when it comes to conspiracy theories but not when it comes to marketing jeans for American men and strong women. Jen will represent the 40+, middle aged, fit woman. You can wear these jeans when you take a hot Yoga class, while walking three dogs, or when doing Pilates. Uh-ummmn. These jeans are perfect for women with sass and sophistication but without the stretch. Perfect for dress down Fridays and when waxing poetic about her heart throb Alex Jones. The wearer of these fantastic, far out, cool jeans is never, ever required to do any mental mining. I guess looking good has it rewards. Or at least that's what Glenn thinks.

  40. my husband was a boston globe columnist for 15 years...and taught me to have fine tuning for listening to radio...Steve was a good guy who got tired of talking on the air..all those long pauses...i understand his moving on...but JEN...I am a psychologist and after listening for two weeks hoped they she would get some therapy...She is missing some major balance in her life...Some of her comments are 'off the wall'. She has a borderline personality disorder...she rambles..she insults..her regressive need at forty to talk about her mother are disturbing...and have her on the show are infantile..She is all over the map in discussions...disconnect callers when she has had enough...and worst of all has callers holding forever while she rambles on endlessly..It is a sad, unprofessional and totally disappointing choice for WBZ..You already have other hosts who are far more interesting than she is...PLEASE, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH...Many of my late night associates have completely STOP LISTENING TO WBZ....SN

  41. Please. Even your husband the "boston globe" writer who taught you "to have fine tuning for listening to the radio" surely told you that making sweeping generalizations about anyone's psychological status is poor form. It is patently clear to everyone that she is not the smartest kid in the room or someone who is comfortable with small talk, or big ideas. Does she listen attentively to others (even her mother)? Not often. It's obvious that she believes [her] feelings are facts. She's a "word girl" not someone who can process information or argue her position on the issues of the day. When Pope Francis said some remarkable things one day, she opened her show with a possible discussion on "Satan".

Her biggest mistake was underestimating her audience.(Google uninsightful Jen Brien)

  42. She needs a week to move? Most of us move in one day..Getting a whole week for it after only being there three months is really a nice perk for her Anyone who has heard her mother pontificate can see where this girl came from. It is so ironic that she can't get a word in when her mother is talking!

  43. IMHO ~ Between 8:PM - 5:AM WBZ is a TOTAL WASTE OF TIME every day.

  44. Keep in mind that one or two people can do a blog hatchet job on somebody because they either have a deep seeded hatred of women in general or they have a friend who was looked over for Jen's radio spot. Jen is a unique woman who lives life her own way...If you need to read blogs to form an opinion about Jen then she probably wont appeal to you. She is definitely a woman who can get the callers fired up about issues and we miss her terribly here on our local cape station.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Good luck finding the person who has both a deep seeded hatred of woman or knows someone who was passed over for the position. Fact: Jen applied/ "auditioned" for the position and was selected as the overnight host.Three people were on the "short list". Hiring Jen or anyone else meant that they would plan an entertaining show and invite callers to participate. Most folks enjoy a quirky person who is self deprecating at times but not someone who delights in circular thinking and expects everyone to enjoy the hunt for the main topic. I'm not in my twilight years (yet) but I know when I'm in the zone.

No one is doing a "hatchet job" on Jen. A little R&R never hurt anyone. Do you think she took the time this week to do a little preparation? What about calling Sally Cabot from Brewster and invite her on to talk about her new book, Benjamin Franklin's Bastard: A father, a son, and the women who loved them. Part of Jen's job is to introduce her listeners to the interesting people living in New England. Sally Cabot is certainly in that category - a brilliant writer.

    ReplyDelete
  48. A little R&R? She has been on the air for three months and has missed 7 days and come into work late one other time. A little R&R? Most people would be fired after three months with that kind of attendance record. A week to move? Who needs an entire week to move? This woman not only is a horrible talk show host, but clearly has major life issues. Can't wait to hear all of the made up stories tonight about the past week, how difficult it was, etc. etc. etc. I am sure there will be a couple of Peggy mentions thrown in also. WBZ, please savye yourself and save us. Please remove her from the air.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Friends or relatives? Pulling strings for her? Have you heard the irresponsible and inappropriate comments she has hurled towards members of her family-specifically her father and her brother? She called him "a liar" and painted her father as neglectful and uncaring. She said he WAS an alcoholic which could mean he's happily enjoying his sobriety today. Wouldn't you think they would like to see her take more than a week of R&R? She needs a patron saint. Is it Mr Casey? Only time will tell.

  62. The morning of October 1, and Brien is late again. Dan Rea continuing his show. They have to fire this woman. 7 absences and two late arrivals at her show in 3 months. Wake up and smell the coffee, Peter Casey. She is unprofessional and totally unprepared to handle this assignment. I have never witnessed anything like this in my life. Unbelievable.

  63. She's not there tonight. I tuned in, and heard Dan Rea. He hosted the 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. hour. It clearly wasn't planned/expected. He said he would be turning the show over to Morgan White, who was on his way in, and who would be hosting the rest of the night. Morgan is now on. 65. I just don't understand why she is still (sometimes) on the air. Unbelievable.

    ReplyDelete
  66. She mentioned on Monday morning that she was 'going to be in bed by 5:20AM'. Apparently she was not driving home to Cape Cod. Did she realize at that time that she wouldn't be returning to 'BZ? She ranted and raved about people who criticized her via the Internet ('people get a life') and while enjoying her typical "flight of ideas" asked callers to recount occasions in life when they encountered "filthy" people in public bathrooms. Were the toilets flushed? Morgan or Bradley Jay should have been called at midnight and asked to relieve Ms Brien by 3PM. She should have been told to take the remainder of the week off. 'BZ is a complete embarrassment.

The word "filthy" was interesting because Kerry used it when describing Jen's hat. Kerry bought her a new one and said, 'the one you're wearing is filthy'.
That and her clothes that smell like a fire pit must make her a real joy to encounter at first light.

  67. Do you think that it was her plan to take the lowest common denominator style of talk radio to new lows while at the same time letting everyone know that her eyesight was failing? So many callers called her suggesting she visit her eye doctor. The dear 92 year old woman "living in a nice condo" was so distressed about "all the people calling with horror stories about going blind" didn't phase Jen. I felt badly for this very articulate and thoughtful woman who tried in such a kind and gentle manner to ask Jen to see a doctor while tacitly suggesting how she could always find another job.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I forgot about Jen going blind and all of the callers telling her to go to the eye doctor (which she said she never does). Why would anyone expect a 45-year-old woman to be able to determine whether or not she should go to the doctor or not? And, it made for another fascinating night of discussion that always comes back to Jen. Simply ponderous. What an embarrassment for WBZ to have this woman on the air.

  68. Why does it take hours for comments to be posted?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Although I never call in, I listen all night and would be likely to give anyone a chance, I recall that Steve wasn't really into the groove of the overnight for some time, but it was never like this. I just cannot listen to this person any longer, her vitriol and ignorance is frightening enough (her uniformed comments on medical issues probably the most disturbing) but couple this with these mysterious absences with crazy stories about losing phone numbers, keys, getting lost (hello? you have a major job now, get GPS?, oh wait GPS means that people will be able to "track you") and what about a cell phone with a cell plan so you could even call in and start your show, I have heard others do it inthe past. And the night she came back (Sunday into Monday) and had the hubris to act as if none of this was anyone's business (while she has made everything about her every sneeze the audience's business) and that there is a "conspiracy" against her, well that was amusing enough to put me to sleep...and find the next night she was MIA again.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I've listened to the overnight programs since the days of Larry Glick and had to get used to each newcomer and their individual styles. I like Jen very much and think she brings a breath of fresh air. Morgan is a very nice man, but I don't like gambling or wrestling or knowing how many minutes until the next break. Jordan is also nice and I like his soothing voice, but is a bit esoteric for my taste. All of the comments about Jen being off the show for a week are nasty. Ever think she may have personal physical problems that ar none of our business? Give her a break and she will grow on you as you keep listening.

    ReplyDelete
  71. before jen we had steve and had to listen about max and now it is about her dog al. this lady has no social skills needs to get a life. bradly is not much better but its better than her. morgan is the one.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Hmmm...Seems odd she is MIA once again, and Morgan is once again the go-to guy to fill in, on a moments notice. Either something's dramatically wrong with Jenn, either personal issues or health issues, or WBZ may be having second thoughts about her show, and are in the process of parting ways. Granted, Jenn's show can be a little off the wall, but it's not your father's Glick program any more either. Personally, I enjoy Morgan's program more, but his producer needs to turn up his microphone a bit, as he is difficult to understand at times. Hope the Jenn Brien issue is resolved quickly, if WBZ wants to keep an overnight audience, rather than lose it to another station with syndicated programming

    ReplyDelete
  73. MORGAN WHITE, JR? YOU PEOPLE HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! HE TALKS TO HIS AUDIENCE LIKE HE'S TEACHING A FIRST OR SECOND GRADE CLASS IN GRAMMAR SCHOOL. JEN'S A PRO. GIVE HER A CHANCE!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Not only does Jen reach erroneous conclusions (@1:19am) she makes unfortunate choices, but her incompetence robs her of the ability to realize it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Morgan White is a very polished on-air host who is the quintessential team player-'BZ should acknowledge his commitment to the organization by offering him the overnight gig. He was asked to come in and be a support to Jordan when he made his return to the station after his precious wife died. Wouldn't we all like a stand up guy like Morgan to sit with us when a catastrophic life event comes our way? I know I would.

You say we should "give her a chance". To do what? Calling her a "pro" is, in my opinion, the same as encouraging someone to behave badly.

  80. Looks like Jenn Brien is a gonner at 'BZ. Apparently she has been canned, according to a release read by Morgan White, at the top of the hour, written by WBZ management. I figured something was up ince he's been a no-show for 7 of the last 8 days. Her last broadcast was this past Monday at midnight, and she was providing little information about her absence from WBZ. I know it's probably none of our business, but the listening audience deserved some form of explanation, as we faithfully tuned into WBZ each night for her program, only to find she was not there. I only started to listen to her program recently, and found it to be an odd mix of news, topics, and the life of Jenn. I'm not surprised she is gone. I miss the days of Larry Glick and that style of overnight program with Larry's personality. It was a good mix of news, interviews, and crazy fun. If only WBZ could find another personality like Glick. Never cared for Steve, or for that matter Bob Raleigh. WBZ needs to pull out all the stops to find another overnight host that can bring back variety and fun to the overnights. Adieu Jenn.

    1. Thank goodness people can see the light! The overnight show was all about her and all she did was complain!! All of us have problems and complicated lives, but don't bring people down every minute. Her voice went right through our heads with the constant "Whining" and complaints from A-Z about her family and paranoid viewpoints of life. We love Morgan and hope he takes over the overnight spot. His intelligence and respect for people is an asset to WBZ. Morgan has been a good "egg" filling in @ a minute's notice. His loyalty to WBZ has gone unnoticed and his years of dedication to this radio station should be rewarded. We listen to WBZ on a daily basis and hope to remain listening to the Dan Rea Show, Jordan Rich Show, and hopefully the Morgan White, Jr. show. Thanks Casey, we hope you are in tune to the listeners and make a good decision.

  88. This whirlwind, nightly nightmare is over. Had there been a look back at Jen's days at WRKO this could have been avoided. Did anyone at WBZ listen to the interview Jen did with Orly Taitz? How was it that she could control the growling, the groans, the whispering, the repetition of words and phases and the incessant slurping of coffee and clearing of the throat? Once 'BZ knows the answer to that question they can put policies in place to see that it doesn't happen again.

Yes, she ate while sitting directly in front of the mic on one of her last mornings at 'BZ. She had the temerity to lash out at colleagues who "she knew" had no on air etiquette. Today she finds herself among those she degraded and demeaned -the unemployed.

  89. Congratulations to WBZ for getting rid of Jen Brien. She was not very bright, often rude to her callers and had extremely right wing political views; on several occasions she expressed racist views and exhibited an extreme hatred of President Obama. Please make Morgan White you new overnight host.

  90. Here's the worry: Was it Peter Casey's scheme all along to get the time slot to syndication? He tried when he fired Steve LeVielle. The story goes that 90-yr.-old Jenna Rosa led a groundswell that made him re-hire Steve, and then to keep it home. This way, he can say the devil (we) made him do it.

  91. This station is really really boring at night. Jen was by far the best host you had there. No disrespect to the fill-ins for what they do however, she was the best choice. I cant listen to these people. Without Jen on the air BZ is the most boring backwoods station on the air. You will have one less listener now. So what did happen? Anyway good luck to Jen!!

    2. I agree. While Jen was far from ordinary, she also was far from boring. I think BZ threw the baby out with the bathwater. Some one on one expectations from management and clear communication could have made the difference. While Morgan White, Jr. is articulate, trivia every night isn't what I call 'talk radio.

  92. shocking to think that bz managment would even consider J b as a talk host. she's emotionaly disturbed and in need of professional counseling. There very few (if any) radio personalities across the country, that have the extrodinary polish and class found in the person of Jrdon Rich. Dan Rae ( though intelligent, but very self centerd) does not come close to the radio persona of Jordon Rich. Jordon should be theBZ template. Jay is hard to follow, verbaly walking all over his machine gun uncordinated out of syc. dialog. Morgan has a calming studied delivery, and more often tha not over dose the trivia putting people to sleep.

  93. I'll try this again, in case I did something wrong, like push a wrong button. If that's not what happened, I won't post again.

Here's the worry. Was it always Peter Casey's scheme to go to syndication in the time slot? He fired Steve LeVielle to get there, and then the groundswell, led by our late Jenna Rosa, brought Mr. LeVielle back. And WBZ decided to keep it local. Can Mr. Casey now say that we made him put it up to a syndicate (what he always wanted to do)? Keep it here!

  96. I thought I heard Morgan White tell of an announcement in the wee hours...that Jen O'Brien would no longer be doing nights at WBZ. He gave no reasons but added that she would be available as a fill-in host. I myself think Jordan Rich is the bes tof the lot available - I usually wait till the braggart Dan Rea has finished and then tune in WBZ. Morgan White is an intelligent and polite host, but I think Jordan Rich offers interesting quetitons for the callers to answer. As for Ms Brien, she was way too opinionated in her right wing beliefs and as a lover of good grammar, I usually was appalled by her presentation.

  98. I think a big part of this situation is the overnight format, itself. Twenty-five hours of live talk radio overnight is challenging . Where is the time for show preparation- reading, booking guests..etc.? I agree with an earlier poster about Jordan Rich, but he has the entire week to prepare for 81/2 hours of airtime a week... Maybe the best solution for overnight would be a rotation of 2-3 show hosts, offering a variety for the listening audience. I thought the auditioning period last fall was good, and when Jen was at her best. There was a bit of trivia with Morgan, politics with Jay, and a more personal and comfortable style with Jen.... And regarding Jen, I often disagreed with some of her political views, but I never heard her be mean or spiteful to callers who challenged her. I continue to be amazed, especially now that her tenure has ended at WBZ, at how mean-spirited and cruel some people can be with their comments. Jen put her feelings out there and shared some of those issues with her audience, and made herself vulnerable, not everyone's piece of cake, I understand . And she obviously experienced I some problems, probably both personal and professional, during the 3 months of the new job. But I am appalled that so many people take such joy in someone else's difficulties.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Jen was a horrible host and I had to turn the radio off as soon as I heard her voice. WBZ would be wise to make Morgan White the permanent host on the overnight.

    ReplyDelete
  100. She is a native speaker of English. Her literacy skills (speaking and listening) were very poor. If we look at her Twitter account (over three years) her writing ability might be at the Grade 9 level. Good speakers and writers are readers. I am not surprised to learn that she was 44 years old when she applied for her first library card. She "did" a double major in Political Science and Philosophy but no one-not even Bill Casey- ever believed that.

  103. Anonymous at 7:49AM. I understand where you are coming from but if we are to engage in a meaningful conversation about something that was so public, we have to be honest or we lose our credibility. No one takes any "joy" in recounting their dissatisfaction with someone who was socially tactless and unprofessional. She showed no interest in people or ideas unless both were on the lunatic fringe. While she could be relied upon to be goofy and unpredictable at what point was it the responsibility of "BZ to step in and inform her that she was hired to talk about social issues, pop culture and interesting people from New England? Was she the only interesting person she knew?

I blame all those who turfed her on from one radio station to another.

  104. I think we need someone with a great sense of humor. I'll never forget Steve playing the kazoo. I loved it when the guests called in and played their musical instruments. Some were good and some not so good but it was good clean fun. Loved when Steve made everyone think there was a big cook-0ut in the parking lot and nothing was going on. Current topics and trivia is okay but not all evening. Late night should be light and whimsical. I don't want to take on the worlds problems and be stressed when I'm trying to relax. Morgan White and Bradley J have good shows but not enough laughs and fun. Sedate is as bad as off the wall. Please, a little class but a lot of laughs will make a great show. Surely there must be someone out there. .

  105. Please, please, don't have Morgan White on every night. I'm sure he is a nice man, but he is SO BORING! As soon as I hear his voice, I turn WBZ off and go to WGN from Chicago. I will never listen again if he is the replacement host.

I agree that Jen Brien was not a good fit and I am a woman. She had too many personal stories and a limited vocabulary. How many times can you say Amazing!!!!

  106. Dave-'BZ offered her the full time position in June. It might have been in their best interest to ask Bradley Jay and Dan Rea to do the supervision that she required. Doing the first hour as the "dynamic duo" could have reduced her anxiety and the chaos she called "the Jen Brien Show". Adequate supervision would not have allowed "Moments with Mom" to continue or a three day wake for Peggy. We would not have had to listen to the revolting and inappropriate comments about members of her family. Do you honestly think they are going to defend her?

Don't expect 'BZ to be her parent or listeners to care whether or not she is well nourished, has adequate rest, has seen her eye doctor, can find an honest mechanic or affordable housing in Brighton or Brookline . All that was required of Ms Brien was to arrive at work on time and prepare an interesting talk show-not send a monkey to visit Big Foot.

  110. This whole situation is just so sad. Honestly, I have never been a full night, all night dedicated listener to any one host; but I have listened to them all, and I must admit I more often than not did enjoy listening to her show. However, that being said, enough is enough. It is time for Jen to put on the big girl pants and behave like a professional. Her most loyal fans are all but waging war on WBZ over her dismissal, with no real explanation as to what happened. I know, it's none of our business. But seriously, she's never filtered herself before, why start now. It is sickening, to read the multiple posts that she allows to remain on her page trashing the hosts who have kept the show going while she was absent, every time she was absent.

  112. I admit that Jan was sometimes off the wall, but for the most part I enjoyed her show. I never found her rude to callers. Personally, I like listening to something light during those hours. Please WBZ do not give the job to Bradley J. whose voice is worst than chalk on a blackboard.

  113. Jen is probably sitting up taking nourishment-even if it's only a chocolate milk.

I hope the quiet days ahead will help you to re-evaluate where you are going and how you will get there. You will find support in the most unlikely places-try not to offend the messenger. 'BZ allowed too much "stinkin' thinkin'" to pass as "good radio" and sadly for your callers/followers they no longer have an "open forum" to pull your chain. When you are honest with yourself you'll be able to recognize folks who won't lie to you. That will be a blessing.

  116. There are four great universities/colleges in the Boston area who WBZ could tap for the overnight gig. What about sending a letter to the HR Directors at Boston University, Harvard, MIT and Northeastern asking if a grad student would like to compete for the overnight gig one or two nights a week? This might be a terrific way to get fill in hosts when Bradley Jay and Morgan White have conflicts or scheduled commitment elsewhere. There are lots of mature students who could bring an uptempo, egalitarian attitude and possibly a new way of defining just what "pop culture" is all about. Give it a try.

  119. Jen Brien was totally unprofessional and a disaster as a radio talk show host. WBZ made the right decision in offing her. I hope they stick with it and do not succumb to the campaign by her fans to reinstate her. The fans (really few in number, I suspect) are using Jen's Facebook page to whip up support to lobby WBZ and its advertisers to put Jen back on the air. It might help if listeners who couldn't stand Jen contact WBZ to congratulate them for their decision. The risk of having Jen back on WBZ is just too much to stomach.

    ReplyDelete
  120. @2:43AM The announcement Morgan White read was dripping with acrimony and when he told listeners "to leave it alone" he meant it. Whatever Jen did when she left the studio that morning (to never return again) was planned, reckless, and inappropriate. The closest Jen will ever get to broadcasting again is when she counts seals with Patrick Desmaris.

  123. Words to mark: Sarah Palin redux.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Her bona fides and stripes:

She was an MP in the US Army, and Soldier of the Year. She established her AM radio bona fides at WRKO. Then she passed the WBZ ideological litmus test -- in the vein of David Brudnoy, Gary LaPierre, Jon Keller and Tom Matthews. She earned her stripes with the truck drivers, night after night. "What are you carrying, dear, if you can say?" She had them in the palm of her hand. Her rant on her last overnight - that she hated being blamed for all that was wrong with black people's lives - had to have hit the modern-day permissible mark for residual racism still unresolved out there. And when backed into a corner, she pretends to accommodate, but cuts people off, "Thank you for the call, dear". And then she doubles down.

She can be ... useful. She can be molded and burnished. Sarah Palin is aging, and losing the interest of the types that The Republican Establishment wants to court -- the working-class conservative. And Michelle Bachmann has bounced a few times already.

Jen Brien's arc isn't over. Her time is before her yet.

AND purchased a pie from a bakery that Oprah recommended in Centerville, MA. Will you ever forget her mother going on and on about how she ate the entire award winning pie in three days!! She can't tell you or I or anyone else what made her the woman she is today. She was born a Catholic and walked away from the church; raised in a family grounded in the values of the Democratic Party and walked away with none (certainly not any philosophical or political ones). She entered the Army and walked away thinking she had a right to trash her Commander in Chief. She applied for a job in radio without communication skills and proved it night after night beyond and to the exclusion of any doubt. What did these life events teach her? Is she the mean girl? The one who finds favor with the wingnuts of the world? Is she the rude person at the supermarket she loved to slam? Will there be more to life than toilet talk, Big Foot and derogatory comments about "illegals" and those who don't know when to "you know what" or get off the opt?
