Taste For Pop Music Stagnates At 33-Years-Of-Age

Researchers at Spotify and Echo Nest compared listening data with artist popularity data, and scored the average popularity of artists listened to by Spotify users in 2014.

According to the Daily Mail, They found Spotify listeners between 13 and 14 years old mostly listened to music from artists at the top of the charts, but by age 15 that taste began to diversify, expand, and change until about age 25. Once age 25 hits, music discovery slows and people move away from popular mainstream music. The data shows having kids causes people's musical tastes to "age" more quickly, and that men tend to move away from mainstream artists sooner and to a greater degree than women do.

Ajay Kalia, a taste profiler at Spotify commented on the study on his blog, writing, "Two factors drive this transition away from popular music.

First, listeners discover less-familiar music genres that they didn't hear on FM radio as teens from artists with a lower popularity rank.

Second, listeners are returning to music that was popular when they were coming of age-- but which has phased out of popularity."

Do you enjoy listening to current hits, or do you tend to prefer other music?
