Glenn Beck rides a media empire
Glenn Beck will promote his book "Broke: Restarting the Engine of America" with a $90.50-a-ticket performance Thursday at the Benedum Center in Pittsburgh's Cultural District, a day after a book signing in Robinson.
Mike Wereschagin at The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review writes, the show will be simulcast to 537 movie theaters across the country, where tickets cost $20.
"It's definitely a unique book (promotion), but that's because he's a unique media figure," said Adam Schiffer, political science professor at Texas Christian University. "He's an institution unto himself."
Beck's talk radio show is the third most-listened to, with more than 10 million listeners, behind Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, according to Talkers Magazine, a trade publication. His television show on Fox News draws about 2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Six of his books, which he promotes on the radio, are best-sellers. A production company he founded in 2002 produces or co-produces his shows, performances and books.
"Talk radio, TV, books — he uses all of those pieces to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts," Schiffer said. Patrons of one media follow him to the others, driving up ratings and book sales, Schiffer said.
"All of the major media personalities have followings, but his is more loyal. It's more of a cult of personality. I think that's why he's able to so successfully go across the platforms."
"Broke" sold 195,000 copies since its Oct. 26 release, according to Nielsen Bookscan, which tracks book sales. His other recent release, "The Overton Window," a novel, sold 329,000 copies since June 15. Beck is the only author with two adult nonfiction books on Nielsen's 10 best-sellers' list for 2009.
