Nielsen To Pay Applicants After Discrimination Allegation

Nielsen Co. US has agreed to pay $570,000 in back wages to nearly 1,000 applicants following allegations of discrimination in the company’s hiring practices at two Texas locations, according to the Department of Labor.

The Dallas Morning News reports the conciliation agreement came after a “routine” compliance evaluation by the department’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, according to a news release. Preliminary findings alleged Nielsen, for nearly two years, discriminated against Asian, Black, multiracial and white people who applied to research interviewer and bilingual research interviewer positions at its Dallas facility, the news release said.

The department said the alleged discrimination occurred in Dallas from Jan. 1, 2016, to July 31, 2018. According to the agreement, the department said Nielsen’s hiring process and selection procedures potentially adversely impacted non-Hispanic applicants when compared with Hispanic applicants.

Nielsen also was accused of using discriminatory hiring practices against Black and white applicants at its San Antonio facility from May 1, 2018, through March 18, 2020.

Nielsen agreed to pay back wages and interest to 994 job applicants totaling $570,000, the department said. The company will also extend job opportunities to 56 applicants, according to the news release.
