NYC Dem Primary Winner Says He's Trump's Worst Nightmare

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic socialist state legislator who calls himself "Trump's worst nightmare," declared victory in the New York City mayoral primary on Tuesday. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and other candidates, though official results await confirmation by July 1 due to the city’s ranked-choice voting system.

Mamdani, a progressive backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders, stunned with his win, advocating for taxing the wealthy to fund free childcare, bus rides, cheaper groceries, and rent freezes. His campaign championed populist policies like city-owned grocery stores and free public transit.

In a pre-primary debate, Mamdani vowed to confront the Republican president, stating, "I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare—a progressive, Muslim immigrant who fights for my beliefs." His victory speech, attended by progressive celebrities like Cynthia Nixon, Kal Penn, and Ella Emhoff, drew cheers as he denounced Trump as a fascist.

"We’ve won because New Yorkers demand an affordable city where they can thrive, not just survive," he said, pledging to use mayoral power to oppose "Trump’s fascism."
