Philly Radio: Sports Host Glen Macnow To Retire

The new broke over the weekend, Glen Macnow, the longtime WIP personality and a fixture of weekend sports radio in Philadelphia for years, has announced his retirement after more than 31 years. His final show on WIP will be on Saturday, July 131. Throughout his illustrious career, Macnow has left an indelible mark on the Philadelphia sports media landscape. Let’s take a closer look at his remarkable journey:

Distinguished Career: For over three decades, Glen Macnow has graced the airwaves of 94WIP, sharing his insights and opinions about Philadelphia sports. Whether celebrating victories or commiserating over defeats, he has been a constant presence for fans.

Thoughtful Approach: Macnow’s style stands in stark contrast to the more aggressive and abrasive nature of WIP’s weekday hosts. Alongside Hall of Fame scribe Ray Didinger and current co-host Mike Sielski, he brought a calmer and measured perspective to sports discussions, appealing to a different audience.

Beyond the Mic: Macnow’s interests extend beyond sports commentary. He has a stake in the Conshohocken Brewing Company, reflecting his passion for beer and local breweries. His show, “What’s Brewing,” often airs on NBC Sports Philadelphia during off-hours after games.

Changing of the Guard: Macnow’s retirement follows the departure of other radio stalwarts, including Angelo Cataldi and Mike Missanelli. As the sports radio landscape evolves, his exit marks another chapter in the ongoing transition of Philadelphia’s airwaves.

Macnow said it was his choice to walk away, a rarity these days with any media job. WIP actually offered him a “perfectly great” contract to remain with the station, but he decided it was time to call it quits.

Like so many popular Philly sports talkers, Macnow was a reporter for The Inquirer before making the jump to radio. During his time at WIP, he hosted nights, middays, and even enjoyed a four-year stint in the afternoons alongside PHLY and former 97.5 the Fanatic host Anthony Gargano. He’s also been the station’s main Eagles pregame host for the last 17 seasons.

“Glen Macnow joined WIP when the sports talk format was still early days, and before there was an obvious business to be built. His addition was the next part of the critical path that helped WIP become one of the biggest sports brands in the country,” WIP station manager Rod Lakin said. “In the view of a world where we’re looking for special and different, Glen is in a class of his own — exceptional author, host, and theatrical performer.”

In recent years, Macnow narrowed his focus to a weekend show, which he currently cohosts with Inquirer columnist Mike Sielski on Saturdays and Jody McDonald on Sundays. The show is known for its deliberate pace and willingness to diverge into non-sports topics, including movies and pop culture.
