March 8 In Radio History

In 1925...John B. Gambling started at WOR.

John B. Gambling
John Bradley Gambling (April 9, 1897 – November 21, 1974) was the first of the Gambling family, 3 generations to host mornings on WOR. John B., John A. and John R. - were hosts of WOR Radio's 'Rambling with Gambling' over the course of over 80 years (1925–2000 and 2008–2013).

John B. was the host from 1925 to 1959, when he retired in favor of his son, John A. Gambling. With his Musical Clock, his all-in-fun setting-up exercises, cheerio music, wheezy gags, weather information and news scraps, John B. Gambling was a WOR fixture.

In 1945...The Monkees' singer and actor Mickey Dolenz was born

In 1949...WBAP-FM, Fort Worth Texas, began broadcasting. Today the station is Sports KTCK-FM.

In 1971...Jimi Hendrix's rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" was broadcast by Radio Hanoi.

In 1979...Audio Compact Disc prototype is first demonstrated.

In 1994...NYC Personality Jack Spector - WMCA, WHN, WCBS FM (at 4:40), WNBC, WPIX FM, WQCD - Died.  He was 65.

Jack Spector
Spector began his career in 1955 and in 1961 became one of the original WMCA Good Guys.  In late December 1963, WMCA, with Spector, earned the distinction of being the first New York City radio station to play the Beatles' Capitol Records' single, "I Want to Hold Your Hand." (Outside New York, the single's broadcast debut is widely accepted to have occurred earlier at WWDC in Washington, D.C.)

After WMCA moved to a talk format, Spector went to WHN, then a vocal-based easy listening station. He remained for a while after WHN became a Country music station in 1973. In 1974, Spector left WHN to go to WCBS-FM where he hosted a 1955-1964 based Oldies show called "The Saturday Night Sock Hop" and another regular weekend shift. He was also a full-time swing host there, filling in for various airstaffers over the years. In 1983, Cousin Brucie began doing every third Saturday night of the month. Spector remained at WCBS-FM until the Spring of 1985.

In 1985, Spector was at WNBC as the original host of "Sports Night". He went then to WPIX-FM, which was playing an adult contemporary format. Upon their change to NAC and soon after to smooth jazz, he became one of the first air personalities on CD 101.9. Spector also worked as an optician when he was not on the air.

Late in 1988, Spector left WQCD and joined the staff of WHLI on Long Island, NY playing an Adult Standards format. That station began mixing in more rock and roll oldies by the early '90s. After a few Radio Greats Weekends at WCBS-FM, Jack Spector returned as a part-time swing announcer there in 1993 while working full-time at WHLI.

On March 8, 1994, shortly after starting a recording of Louis Prima's "I'm In The Mood For Love", he suffered an apparent fatal heart attack and collapsed.

Set Clocks AHEAD One Hour Saturday Night

Daylight Savings Time in the United States is the practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the warmer part of the year, so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less. Most areas of the United States currently observe daylight saving time (DST), the exceptions being Arizona (except for the Navajo Nation, which does observe daylight saving time),  Hawaii, and the overseas territories of Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.

From 1970 until 2006, most of Indiana in the Eastern Time Zone did not observe daylight saving time, but the entire state started to do so in April 2006 after eight counties in western Indiana were shifted from the Eastern Time Zone to the Central Time Zone.

Daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, with the time changes taking place at 2:00 a.m. local time. With a mnemonic word play referring to seasons, clocks "spring forward and fall back"—that is, in spring (technically late winter) the clocks are moved forward from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., and in fall they are moved back from 2:00 am to 1:00 am.

Proponents of Daylight Saving Time argue that most people prefer a greater increase in daylight hours after the typical "nine-to-five" workday.   Supporters have also argued that DST decreases energy consumption by reducing the need for lighting and heating, but the actual effect on overall energy use is heavily disputed.

Daylight saving has caused controversy since it began. Winston Churchill argued that it enlarges "the opportunities for the pursuit of health and happiness among the millions of people who live in this country" and pundits have dubbed it "Daylight Slaving Time". Historically, retailing, sports, and tourism interests have favored daylight saving, while agricultural and evening entertainment interests have opposed it, and its initial adoption had been prompted by energy crisis and war.

Proponents of DST generally argue that it saves energy, promotes outdoor leisure activity in the evening (in summer), and is therefore good for physical and psychological health, reduces traffic accidents, reduces crime, or is good for business. Groups that tend to support DST are urban workers, retail businesses, outdoor sports enthusiasts and businesses, tourism operators, and others who benefit from increased light during the evening in summer.

Opponents argue that actual energy savings are inconclusive, that DST increases health risks such as heart attack, that DST can disrupt morning activities, and that the act of changing clocks twice a year is economically and socially disruptive and cancels out any benefit. Farmers have tended to oppose DST.

NBC Makes It Official: Lack Is Back

Andrew Lack has been named chairman of NBC News and MSNBC. The announcement came via a staff memo sent out on Friday morning from NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Lack will replace Pat Fili-Krushel, who will move into a corporate role on Burke's executive team.

Throughout the negotiations, Lack has had important advocates inside NBC News, where he was president from 1993-2001, and has maintained friendships with the network's top talent including Tom Brokaw and Matt Lauer, say sources. Lack also has a close relationship with exiled Nightly News anchor Brian Williams. And many at NBC News expect Lack to make rehabilitating Williams a top priority, though it's unclear what that would look like.

Deborah Turness, who was recruited in 2013 by Fili-Krushel, remains president of NBC News. Lack will have oversight of NBC News and MSNBC, not CNBC. NBC News and MSNBC, which has suffered sinking ratings that already have resulted in the cancellation of multiple shows, will get Lack's immediate attention.

The arrival of Mr. Lack, who was president of NBC News from 1993 until 2001, represents the largest step in a broad restructuring of the news operation.

Mark Feldstein, a journalism professor at the University of Maryland, told The NY Times that the management changes at NBC followed the typical playbook for media organizations engulfed in scandals.

“You bring in a seasoned veteran to stabilize the ship, and that is what Andy Lack is,” Mr. Feldstein said. “They realize that the problem was deeper than just one anchor monster.”

“I wouldn’t expect revolutionary change from Lack,” Mr. Feldstein added. Noting that Mr. Lack was 67, he said, “This is probably a short-term fix.”

NBC-Couric Rumors Could Be Contract Ploy

Katy Couric
The announcement that Andy Lack has returned to head-up NBCNews has set off speculation that Couric, who’s good friends with Lack, could unseat Brian Williams at “NBC Nightly News” or Savannah Guthrie at “Today.”

Multiple news outlets reported Lack and Couric, who’s currently a "global anchor" at Yahoo, have had a preliminary discussion about her possible return to NBC.

But an NBC News insider told PageSix at the NY Post: “On Friday morning, Andrew Lack told executives at NBC News that he and Katie have had no discussions.”

The insider added, “And the truth is she isn’t welcome back at ‘Today.’ There’s still a lot of people at the show who worked with her back in the day, and she wasn’t very nice to work with, especially toward the end.”

Other reports buzzed that Couric could take over “NBC Nightly News” from beleaguered Williams. But we’re told Lack is also close to Williams, and it’s highly likely that the returning exec would hope to reinstate the suspended anchor.

Couric is now in contract talks with Yahoo and insiders speculate that the NBC rumors only benefit Couric and her contract talks.

Couric is currently vacationing in Asia with her husband.

Beasley Reports 4Q Earnings Rose 23.5 Percent

Beasley Broadcast Group, Inc. today announced operating results for the three and twelve month periods ended December 31, 2014.

On December 1, 2014 the Company completed an Asset Exchange with CBS Radio Stations Inc. (CBS Radio) whereby Beasley exchanged a total of five radio stations in the Philadelphia and Miami-Fort Lauderdale markets for a total of fourteen CBS Radio stations in the Tampa-St. Petersburg, Charlotte and Philadelphia markets. As a result of the transaction, in accordance with U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”), the Company is required to report the five stations that CBS Radio received under “discontinued operations” for the 2014 fourth quarter and full year, despite having operated them through November.

Commenting on the results, George G. Beasley, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, “On a reported basis, fourth quarter net revenue from continuing operations rose 23.5% and SOI increased 14.6%, while operating income of $1.8 million was impacted by $1.7 million of transaction and termination expenses related to the Asset Exchange and otherwise would have compared favorably with the $2.8 million in the comparable year ago period.

George G. Beasley
“However, given the required accounting treatment for discontinued operations, the results include only one month of operations from the stations we received in the asset exchange, while excluding the results of the stations we gave up in the transaction. As a result, we believe a pro forma presentation, which assumes the asset exchange occurred on January 1, 2013, better reflects the operating results. On a pro forma basis, fourth quarter net revenue decreased 4.3% to $28.9 million while SOI declined 8.0% to $9.2 million.

Importantly, while the fourth quarter pro forma presentation allows for a comparison of the same stations during both periods, it does not reflect our recently initiated and planned format and personnel changes in Tampa as well as expense reductions in Tampa and Charlotte, the benefits of which we expect will be reflected in our results as we move through 2015 and into 2016.

“With respect to the new markets we now operate in, Tampa-St. Petersburg is the nation’s 18th largest radio market when ranked by revenue while Charlotte is the nation’s 24th largest radio revenue market. The six station cluster we now operate in Tampa-St. Petersburg is already competitive on a revenue share basis, and we have initiated several strategies to capitalize on the significant upside in this cluster.

“The seven station cluster we acquired in Charlotte is a market revenue share leader, so our strategies in this market to drive SOI growth are focused on extending successes and driving efficiencies in operations and processes. Overall, our post-closing integration, costefficiency and operating plans in both markets, combined with our legacy focus on targeted localism and delivering quality programming, effective online marketing solutions and dedicated service to the listeners and advertisers in these markets are proceeding on schedule.

Study: Local News Interest High In Digital Age

A new study released by Pew Research Center indicates a interest in local news content in each of three metro areas studied—Denver, Macon and Sioux City.

The surveys probed residents about their news habits, civic engagement and attitudes about the city and the media that serve it. Because each city received its own customized survey, the data are kept separate rather than being combined, and comparisons are made from one metro area to the next.

According to Pew, there is one overarching finding to emerge from the three surveys.  the study indicates a pervasive interest in local news across these metro areas. In all three cities, nearly nine-in-ten residents follow news about their local area very or somewhat closely, and roughly half follow it very closely, with Macon showing the highest rates of the three. There is more differentiation when it comes to news at the neighborhood level, as about four-in-ten (41%) Denver residents follow neighborhood news very closely, compared with 58% of Macon residents and 49% of residents in Sioux City.

See The Complete Report: Click Here

In the ways that residents keep up with and engage in local news, Denver shows some clear signs of greater digital connection. But many news habits are strikingly similar from city to city. Traditional news outlets still dominate, even in Denver, though certain niche or government entities make a mark in each city. Across the three cities, residents comment on news websites or blogs, call into news programs and share news in social media at roughly the same rates. Local government and politics as well as the local economy are discussed often by about half of the residents in each city. And the most civically engaged consistently show a greater connection to local news.

Peter Liguori

"In terms of WGN America, we are taking a measured approach to investments in programming, which we believe will increase distribution, advertising revenue, carriage fees and brand value.  We are particularly excited about the fourth quarter of 2015, when audiences will get a first-hand look at WGN America's future, as we will premiere a full slate of exclusive syndicated and original series, which we anticipate will drive significant revenue, EBITDA, and margin growth for years to come."

A fight over control of Glen Campbell's affairs appears to be brewing in Tennessee between two of the singer-songwriter's eight children and his wife of more than three decades, according to The LA Times.

Debby Campbell-Cloyd and Travis Campbell, their father's oldest daughter and son, filed a petition in January alleging that Kim Campbell, Glen Campbell's fourth wife, is keeping the 78-year-old "secluded from the rest of the family" and prohibiting the family "from participating in his care and/or treatment," the Associated Press reported Wednesday.

They are reportedly asking the court to appoint conservators and a guardian to manage their father's medical and financial interests.

The country star is in the late stages of Alzheimer's disease and since June 2014 has been living in a long-term care facility where he receives round-the-clock care.

Campbell-Cloyd questioned Kim Campbell's decision when her father was placed in the facility, the AP said, and told a magazine at the time that she and the older Campbell kids learned of the decision through news reports. Campbell-Cloyd referred questions to her attorney on Wednesday.

"It is crushingly sad to see him afflicted with Alzheimer's, but indulging those feelings does not help him," Kim Campbell told the AP at the time. "I am his wife, and no one wants him home more than me, but I must do what is in his best interest."

The current petition, which is sealed but was reviewed by the AP, alleges that Kim Campbell is not providing her husband with needed toiletries and clothing, not visiting him regularly and possibly mishandling his finances. Several of his children are not on a list of approved visitors, the petition says.

Report: Ex-Glenn Beck Execs To Start New Digital Venture

Chris Balfe
Glenn Beck's top two lieutenants have left Beck's Internet and television channel, TheBlaze, and are starting a new venture together, according to CNN Money.

The departing executives are Chris Balfe, who was Beck's CEO, and Joel Cheatwood, who was president and chief content officer.

According to people familiar with their plans, the two men are building a digital media startup that will reflect some of the lessons learned while at TheBlaze. The startup is currently in stealth mode while the two men talk with potential partners.

Joel Cheatwood
TheBlaze was a big risk when Beck, Balfe and Cheatwood launched it in 2011, months after Beck and Cheatwood left Fox News. It's now credited with being one of the first direct-to-subscriber streaming video businesses, a category that other media companies and A-list celebrities are now pursuing with vigor.

Balfe departed Mercury Radio Arts, the parent firm of TheBlaze, in December. He had been Beck's right-hand man for more than a decade -- before, during and after the host's tumultuous tenure at Fox -- so his exit raised some eyebrows at the time.

Cheatwood left more recently -- sometime last month -- and declined to comment on Thursday, but indicated that the departures were amicable. In fact, he referred questions to a spokesman for Beck, who relayed Beck's praise for both executives.

BBC1 Personality Zane Lowe Does Final Show

Zane Lowe
After over a decade as a DJ, Zane Lowe is leaving BBC Radio 1 to join Apple. Today, his final radio show aired.

Listen to the full two-hour show: Click Here

According to pitchford.com, Lowe and his co-workers spent the program swapping stories and playing the records that moved them most from the past 12 years, such as Arctic Monkeys' "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor", Arcade Fire's "Keep the Car Running", and Kendrick Lamar's "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe". Lowe sang along to the songs, too. (We feel you on "Mr. Brightside", Zane!)

Lowe himself only picked the final song: Queens of the Stone Age's "A Song for the Dead", calling the band a "constant" of his time on the radio.

Lowe joined the BBC in 2002, and is credited with breaking many artists that would go on to have huge careers, in addition to interviewing some of music's biggest names. Last week, he conducted an exhaustive interview with Kanye West. His role at Apple has yet to be clarified.
