Now in its 10th year, the Tom Joyner Family Reunion — hosted
by the nationally syndicated radio host — started Thursday, with thousands
packed into the Kissimmee hotel and convention center, according to a story in
the Orlando Sentinel.
Held at various Orlando locations since its inception in
2003, the reunion has become a must-attend for many black families, who come
from as far away as Atlanta, Detroit, New York and Fort Lauderdale.
"It's a beautiful thing," Joyner said Saturday as
he shook hands, posed for pictures and met with fans. "And I get a lot of
hugs."
Joyner started the reunion as a way to bring together his more than 8 million
listeners for a positive, family-oriented event. Since 2003, the reunion grew
from about 5,000 people in its first few years to more than 14,000 last year.
This year's reunion features panel discussions, product
demonstrations and a host of well-known artists, including OMG Girlz, Diggy Simmons
and Kem. The R&B super-group New Edition, celebrating its 30th anniversary
of the hit "Candy Girl," was scheduled to perform Saturday night with
Bobby Brown.
