R.I.P.: Jim Farley Veteran Radio News Programmer

The broadcasting industry is mourning the death of veteran WTIOP Radio Programmer Jim Farley.

Jim Farley’s remarkable tenure as Vice President of News & Programming at WTOP Washington DC left an indelible mark on the radio industry. During his seventeen years in that role (1996–2013), he oversaw the station’s transition from 1500 to 103.5, solidifying its position as a top-rated station nationwide. His leadership and commitment to excellence shaped WTOP’s success, and his legacy continues to resonate with colleagues and listeners alike.

WTOP SVP/General Manager Joel Oxley on Monday shared a memo with staffers, “Of course, his work here at WTOP is legendary.  As PD of WTOP from 1996 until he retired in 2013 Jim took us to new heights. Most importantly, Jim was an absolutely fantastic person.  Time and time and time again he would make me laugh when I went into his office.  He was truly one of a kind.  I miss him already. Jim was living the good life with his wife, Jo, in Florida.  Condo President, working with charities and still posting about radio on a regular basis.  I’ve passed our condolences along to Jo and his family.”

His impact extended beyond WTOP, as he previously held key roles at NBC News Radio and ABC Radio News. 

Farley’s memorable one-liners, like “Get it right, then get it first,” became mantras in the newsroom. He fostered a close-knit, hardworking team, emphasizing that radio was about storytelling, not just reporting. Farley’s legacy lives on, and he’ll be dearly missed by colleagues and listeners alike. After retiring, he continued to contribute to the industry through his News Doctor consultancy.

He retired to Florida in 2013.
