7/17 WAKE-UP CALL: U-S Is Hot 'n' Wet

An extreme heatwave peaked in the western United States on Sunday, with temperatures reaching 128 Fahrenheit in the California desert, while flash flooding continued to menace the Northeast, killing at least five people. Nearly a quarter of the U.S. population fell under extreme heat advisories, partly due to a stubborn heat dome that has been parked over western states. While baking parts of the country, the heat dome has also helped generate heavy rains in the Northeast, a pattern expected to continue for days if not weeks, according to the National Weather Service. In Bucks County PA, just north of Philadelphia, downpours and flash flooding over the weekend killed at least five people. Nearly 7 inches of rain fell on the area in 45 minutes late Saturday.

⛈NEW YORKERS URGED TO STAY OFF ROADS: An unpredictable rainstorm in New York City on Sunday put the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and the east side of Manhattan under a flood warning and pushed Gov. Hochul to urge New Yorkers to stay off roads. “Please heed this warning — it’s just for a short time,” Hochul said at an afternoon news conference in Midtown Manhattan. “Please stay home. Stay off the roads until this has passed.” Rain totals in southern New York could approach records, the governor said. The flood warning, issued by the National Weather Service, also covered Nassau and Westchester Counties and swaths of southwestern Connecticut, including Stamford and Norwalk. More than 5 million people live in the area put under the warning, the National Weather Service said.

➤S-W BAKES: A dangerous heat wave currently affecting the US Southwest persisted Sunday - bringing with it triple-digit temperatures that could break several records. The forecast, for the most part, pertains to communities in Arizona, Nevada, and a sprawling slice of California, where more than 110million are under heat advisories. It's a continuation of blistering temperatures seen last week, which came to a head Saturday - slamming  cities such as Phoenix with temps that topped a record 118 degrees, and others, such as Vegas and Fresno, with heat just a few degrees cooler. The forecast, for the most part, pertains to communities in Arizona, Nevada, and a sprawling slice of California, where more than 110million are under heat advisories.

➤GEORGIA GUNMAN DEAD: A man accused of killing four people and injuring two officers near Atlanta over the weekend was shot and killed during a manhunt for the 40-year-old. The intense manhunt for Andre Longmore began after the Saturday morning shootings of three men and one woman in a subdivision of Hampton before driving away from a subdivision. A Henry County Sheriff's spokesperson said law enforcement forces killed Longmore in a nearby area of Clayton County, adding a Henry County sheriff's deputy and a Clayton County police officer were injured in the attempt to arrest Longmore.

➤GUNS TAKEN FROM SUSPECT'S HOME: Authorities Sunday carted off a bin of rifles from the Long Island home of suspected Gilgo Beach serial killer Rex Heuermann, who had legal permits for 92 guns. A state police investigator hauled the blue plastic tub of weapons from Heuermann’s Massapequa Park home as authorities continue to scour for evidence after his arrest Thursday in the 12-year-old slayings of three women. “He has a very large safe in which guns are kept,” Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said. “We’re continuing to execute search warrants.” Most of Heuermann’s weapons were rifles, a law-enforcement source said. 




The suspect, 59, a married father and architect with Midtown offices, has been charged in the slayings of Malissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, and Amber Costello, 27.

➤RUSSIAN BRIDGE CLOSED: The Crimea Bridge, a key supply line for Russian troops in Ukraine, was damaged in an "emergency" situation which killed two people and injured a child, Russian officials said on Monday, while Ukrainian media reported blasts on the bridge. Traffic was stopped from using the Russian-built bridge linking Russia to Crimea, which Moscow seized in 2014, said Russian officials. The 12-mile road and rail bridge has been a pride infrastructure project of President Vladimir Putin, who drove a Mercedes across the bridge in 2022 after it was repaired following an explosion. Sergei Aksyonov, a Russia-installed governor, said the emergency occurred on the 145th pillar of the bridge which links the Crimean peninsula to the Russian region of Krasnodar. He did not provide any further details.

➤UNITED AIRLINES AGREES TO GIVE UNION PILOTS BIG PAY RAISES: United Airlines and the union representing its pilots said Saturday they reached agreement on a contract that will raise pilot pay by up to 40% over four years. The union valued the agreement at about $10 billion. It followed more than four years of tumultuous bargaining that included picketing and talk of a strike vote. The union said the agreement includes substantial increases in pay, retirement benefits and job security.

➤SYPHILIS OUTBREAK DECLARED: 128% INCREASE IN CASES AMONG WOMEN IN HOUSTON: The number of syphilis cases in Houston, Texas, among women has jumped by 128% from 295 in 2019 up to 674 cases in 2022. That and other similar syphilis statistics have prompted the Houston Health Department to declare an outbreak of this sexually transmitted infection (STI). During that same time period, the number of newly diagnosed infections has risen by 57% from 1,845 to 2,905.

➤TRUMP SAYS IT'S IMPOSSIBLE THERE'S NO WH COCAINE CULRIT: Donald Trump insists that the Secret Service was able to find out who brought cocaine into the White House - despite the agency closing the investigation last week unsolved. The former president said the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) is filled with 'smart' people and said it 'impossible' that they haven't found the culprit. An agent found a bag with less than a gram of cocaine in the cubby of a cell phone lockbox in the West Wing on July 2, leading to a hazmat evacuation of the White House. Secret Service launched an investigation to find who brought the illicit drug into one of the most secure locations in the U.S.

💸POWERBALL GROWS: The Powerball jackpot skyrocketed to $900 million after nobody picked all six winning numbers Saturday - making it the third-biggest prize in the game's history.  After no grand prizes for 37 drawings, the record-setting jackpot could be claimed as soon as Wednesday - at the lotto's next scheduled drawing. The sum already swelled to $875million - still its third-largest ever - this past week.

🎾ALCARAZ BEATS DJOKOVIC IN 5 SETS:  Days before the Wimbledon men’s final, Novak Djokovic stood on Centre Court and announced that he was still waiting for the next crop of young players to come and challenge him. Djokovic was 36 years old, a 23-time major winner and seemingly still at the height of his powers. “They want to win,” he joked, “but it ain’t happening.”  On Sunday, it finally happened: Carlos Alcaraz, the 20-year-old magician from Spain, came to Centre Court and took down Novak Djokovic in a 4-hour, 42-minute epic, 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to become the newest Wimbledon champion.  “I fell in love with the grass,” Alcaraz said. “I didn’t expect to play at this level… I played just four tournaments on grass.”

⚽MESSI IN MIAMI: Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas hailed Lionel Messi as 'America's No 10' as he welcomed the World Cup winner to his new team at Sunday's unveiling. Mas, who with Beckham has pulled out all the stops to bring Messi to Major League Soccer, gave the final speech before Messi made his way out onto the DRV PNK Stadium for the first time as a Miami player. And his words to the 20,000 fans in attendance showed just how huge a move Messi's is for the reputation of soccer across the U-S. Messi revealed last month he had decided to join the Florida side as his contract with Paris St Germain came to an end. With the deal now officially done, Messi is in line to make his debut for his new employers on Friday against Mexico’s Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup.

⚾MLB ROCKIES 8 YANKEES 7:  Nolan Jones led off the 11th inning with a tying, two-run homer off Nick Ramirez, Alan Trejo hit a game-ending drive off Ron Marinaccio and the Colorado Rockies beat the Yankees 8-7 Sunday to take two of three from New York. Colorado, a National League-worst 36-58, overcame a 3-1 deficit when C.J. Cron hit an eighth-inning grand slam off Clay Holmes, the first home run allowed by the right-hander this season. New York tied the score in the ninth against Daniel Bard on Gleyber Torres' run-scoring infield single and Harrison Bader's sacrifice fly. Playing into the 11th for the first time this year, the Yankees opened a 7-5 lead against Gavin Hollowell (1-0) on run-scoring singles by Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Pereza, who was recalled from the minors when Josh Donaldson was put on the injured list Sunday because of a strained right calf. 

⚾MLB METS 2 DODGERS 1: Luis Guillorme delivered the walk-off RBI double in the 10th inning for host New York, which snapped a four-game losing streak by defeating Los Angeles. The Dodgers' six-game winning streak was snapped. Guillorme, pinch-hitting for Mark Canha with automatic runner Brett Baty at second, failed to put the ball in play on consecutive bunt attempts against Nick Robertson (0-1). Guillorme then doubled down the first base line past a drawn-in Freddie Freeman to easily score Baty. David Robertson (4-2) allowed one hit over two scoreless innings and stranded automatic runner James Outman at third in the top of the 10th.

⚾MLB ORIOLES 5 MARLINS 4: Kyle Bradish pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings while holding Miami to three hits as host Baltimore stretched its winning streak to eight games. Bradish has tossed 13 1/3 innings without giving up a run across his past two starts. Anthony Santander homered as the Orioles made the most of their five hits and three walks on the way to completing a sweep of the three-game series. The Marlins, who have lost five of their past seven games, received a positive performance from reliever Johnny Cueto in his first appearance since early April and just his second outing of the season. He came off the injured list and threw three shutout innings while allowing one hit.
