Weekly Ratings: Fox Outpaces ESPN During Sports Playoffs


FOX News Channel (FNC) ended the week of April 20 averaging 2.9 million weekday primetime viewers and 263,000 in the 25-54 demo, outpacing ESPN (2.6 million) during the NBA and NHL playoffs. 

Notably, the network’s breaking news coverage surrounding the White House Correspondents’ Dinner led all of television with 5.6 million viewers during the 10 PM/ET hour on Saturday. Leading all of cable news for the week, FNC dominated MS NOW (1.4 million and 145,000 A25-54) and nearly quadrupled CNN (734,000 and 109,000 A25-54) in total viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research Big Data + Panel. 

In Monday – Sunday primetime, FNC drew 2.9 million viewers and in Monday – Sunday total day, FNC drew over 1.7 million viewers. Meanwhile, CBS Evening News (3,771,000 million viewers) recorded its lowest rated week since host Tony Dokoupil began helming the program and saw its third consecutive week with under four million total viewers.

The Five maintained its stronghold in the afternoon with 3,642,000 million viewers and 283,000 in the 25-54 demo. In the 6 PM/ET hour, Special Report with Bret Baier secured nearly 2.8 million viewers and 223,000 in the 25-54 demo. At 7 PM/ET, The Ingraham Angle garnered just over 2.6 million viewers and 225,000 in the 25-54 demo. During the 8 PM/ET hour, Jesse Watters Primetime notched nearly 3.2 million viewers and 253,000 in the 25-54 demo. At 9 PM/ET, Hannity delivered roughly 2.8 million viewers and 238,000 in the 25-54 demo. During the 11PM/ET hour, FOX News @ Night with Trace Gallagher nabbed close to 1.6 million viewers and 177,000 in the 25-54 demo.

Continuing to command late-night, FNC’s Gutfeld! (weekdays, 10 PM/ET) averaged 2.9 million viewers and posted 314,000 in the 25-54 demo, outpacing the landscape in total viewers and the 25-54 demo across the board. Gutfeld! also eclipsed broadcast competition, including CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in total viewers (2.2 million viewers and 299,000 A25-54) and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! (1.9 million viewers and 273,000 A25-54).



FNC’s daytime shows maintained leads over the broadcast competition. America’s Newsroom (weekdays, 9AM-11AM/ET; 1.9 million viewers), The Faulkner Focus (weekdays, 11AM-12PM/ET; 1.9 million viewers), Outnumbered (weekdays, 12 PM/ET; 1.9 million viewers), America Reports (weekdays, 1PM-3PM/ET; 1.9 million viewers), The Story with Martha MacCallum (weekdays, 3-4PM/ET; 2 million viewers) and The Will Cain Show (weekdays, 4-5PM/ET; 2.2 million viewers) all outranked CBS Mornings (1.8 million viewers), NBC’s Today Jenna & Sheinelle (1.5 million viewers) and ABC’s GMA3 (1.3 million viewers).

Saturday: FOX News Live anchored by Aishah Hasnie (Saturdays, 12-2PM/ET) led as the number one cable news program on Saturday, delivering nearly 2.1 million viewers – and marking its second-highest-rated Saturday for the program this year. Kayleigh McEnany's Saturday In America (Saturdays, 10AM-12PM/ET) landed over 1.7 million viewers, and The Big Weekend Show (weekends, 5-8PM/ET) co-hosted by Tomi Lahren and Johnny Joey Jones averaged over 1.6 million viewers. That night, FNC broke into breaking news coverage as news broke of the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C. Kevin Corke and Alica Acuna anchored a special edition of FOX News Live, averaging nearly 4.2 million viewers in the 9 PM/ET hour, close to 5.6 million viewers tuning in at 10 PM/ET and the 11PM/ET hour securing over 3.8 million viewers.

The Sunday Briefing (Sundays, 11 AM/ET), anchored this week by Jacqui Heinrich, featured the first live interview with President Trump following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, drawing nearly 2.5 million viewers. Sunday Morning Futures (Sundays, 10 AM/ET) anchored by Maria Bartiromo garnered nearly 2.5 million viewers. The Big Weekend Show (weekends, 5-8PM/ET) co-hosted by Tomi Lahren and Johnny Joey Jones posted nearly 2 million viewers. Sunday Night in America with Trey Gowdy (Sunday, 9 PM/ET) outpaced competition in primetime with over 2.3 million viewers, and One Nation with Brian Kilmeade (Sundays, 10PM/ET) delivered nearly 2 million viewers.
