R.I.P.: Mick Ralphs, Guitarist For Bad Company, Mott The Hoople

Mick Ralphs (1944-2025)

Mick Ralphs, the influential guitarist who shaped the sound of British rock bands Bad Company and Mott the Hoople, has passed away at 81. Kymm Britton, representing Ralphs and Bad Company bandmates Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke, confirmed his death, though no cause was specified.

Paul Rodgers shared, “Our Mick has passed, and my heart is heavy. He leaves behind extraordinary songs, cherished memories, and his incredible humor. He was my friend, my songwriting partner, and a versatile guitarist.” Simon Kirke echoed, “Mick was a dear friend, a brilliant songwriter, and an exceptional guitarist.”

Ralphs’ final performance with Bad Company was in 2016 at London’s O2 Arena, followed shortly by a severe stroke that left him bedridden until his death. Rodgers mentioned speaking with Ralphs days before his passing, sharing a laugh and noting, “It won’t be our last.”

Born in Herefordshire, England, Ralphs co-founded Mott the Hoople in 1969, a glam rock band named after Willard Manus’ 1966 novel. He contributed guitar and occasional lead vocals, notably on “Thunderbuck Ram” from their 1970 album. His tenure with Mott the Hoople ended after their 1973 album Mott, following the band’s peak success with David Bowie’s “All the Young Dudes.”

Bad Company, co-founded by Ralphs, is set to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on November 8, 2025, in Los Angeles.
