LA Protests: Rubber Bullet Finds Head Of Photographer

On Sunday evening shocking footage captured a California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer shooting New York Post photographer Toby Canham in the head with a rubber bullet during violent protests in Los Angeles.

Photographer Canham
Canham, 59, was on assignment for The Post, positioned just off the 101 Freeway on an elevated vantage point, filming the clashes between police and rioters. Wearing his press pass, he was struck in the forehead from approximately 100 yards away, causing him to collapse, as seen in the disturbing video he recorded.

The veteran photographer, a former British Army member based in Los Angeles, spent Monday, June 9, 2025, in the hospital receiving treatment for whiplash and neck pain, with a large bruise on his forehead.

“I was filming with my cameras when I got hit,” Canham recounted. “I was alone overlooking the freeway, not surrounded, so I was an easy target.”

Moments before the rubber bullet struck, a flashbang exploded nearby, with shrapnel tearing two holes in his pants.

Canham was injured on the same day an Australian news reporter was also hit by a rubber bullet while reporting live from the scene.

The unrest, ongoing for several days, stems from violent protests in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement actions against undocumented migrants in the city.
