TV Ratings: NBA Playoffs Continue Upward Trend

The NBA conference finals are set, with postseason TV ratings trending upward.

Through the first two rounds, playoff games averaged 4.17 million viewers across ABC, ESPN, and TNT, a 3% increase from 2024, making it the second-most-watched playoffs at this stage since 2014, behind only 2023. Conference semifinals averaged 4.91 million viewers (up 1% from last year), while the first round averaged 3.7 million (up 6%).

The most-watched game was Game 4 of the Timberwolves-Lakers first-round series, drawing 7.35 million viewers on ABC. Minnesota eliminated Los Angeles and then the Warriors, the NBA’s top TV draws, in the following round. Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards now has a chance to emerge as the NBA’s next big star, though Minnesota faces tough odds (+235) against the Thunder in the Western Conference finals, starting Tuesday on ESPN.

In the East, the Knicks return to the conference finals for the first time in 25 years, facing the Pacers. New York’s massive media market and Madison Square Garden’s celebrity-filled courtside should boost ratings.
