TV Ratings: Fox News Channel Leads All Basic Cable


Saturday’s assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump drove viewers to the respective cable networks, lifting what would have been a slow summer news period. Fox News received finished first among total viewers and the advertiser-coveted Adults 25-54 demo during both dayparts, while MSNBC ranked second in total viewers and CNN claimed second in the primetime and total day demos.

TV Newser reports Nielsen live plus same-day data for the week of July 8 saw Fox News average 3.887 million total viewers and 566,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network was up by a respective +89% and +134% relative to the week prior. FNC averaged 2.056 million total viewers and 293,000 demo viewers in total day viewing. Compared to the previous week, it was up +49% in the former category and +68% in the latter.

Among all basic cable networks, Fox News was No. 1 in total primetime viewers and in the primetime demo. In total day, it continued to lead in both measured categories.

  • MSNBC’s primetime lineup averaged 1,199,000 total viewers and 138,000 viewers in the A25-54 demo for the week. The network saw respective week-to-week gains of +31% and +79% from the week prior. In total day, MSNBC averaged 691,000 total viewers and 78,000 demo viewers for gains of +21% and +39%, respectively. MSNBC was the No. 2 cable network in total primetime viewers and jumped from 28th to ninth place in the demo. During total day, it remained at second place in total viewers and tied with TV Land for 9th place in the demo, up from 20th place last week.
  • CNN averaged 1.013 million total primetime viewers and 252,000 A25-54 viewers for week-to-week gains of +87% and +155%, respectively. In total day, CNN brought in 563,000 total viewers and 121,000 viewers in the demo for respective increases of +40% and +78% in those measured categories. CNN finished third in primetime with total viewers and the demo, and also ranked as the No. 3 cable network with total viewers and the demo in total day.

Fox News occupied all 15 spots of the most-watched cable news shows of the week, with Hannity (4.168 million viewers at 9 p.m. ET) taking the top spot.

“World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 newscast on all of broadcast and cable in Total Viewers (7.243 million), Adults 25-54 (990,000) and Adults 18-49 (677,000) during the week of July 1, 2024, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” defeated “NBC Nightly News” (5.456 million, 717,000 and 509,000, respectively) by 1.787 million Total Viewers, by 273,000 Adults 25-54 and by 168,000 Adults 18-49, respectively.



  • “World News Tonight” increased its lead over “NBC Nightly News” versus the previous week in Total Viewers (+14% – 1.787 million vs. 1.561 million), Adults 25-54 (+15% – 273,000 vs. 237,000) and Adults 18-49 (+49% – 168,000 vs. 113,000).
  • “World News Tonight” widened its margins on the year-ago week over “NBC Nightly News” in Total Viewers (+10% – 1.787 million vs. 1.619 million) and Adults 25-54 (+16% – 273,000 vs. 235,000).
  • “World News Tonight” saw gains on the previous week in Adults 25-54 (+3%/+29,000 – 990,000 vs. 961,000) and Adults 18-49 (+5%/+30,000 – 677,000 vs. 647,000).
  • “World News Tonight” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the 5th consecutive season. “World News Tonight” is leading NBC in Adults 25-54 (+143,000 – 1.092 million vs. 949,000) and in Adults 18-49 (+108,000 – 744,000 vs. 636,000). In addition, “World News Tonight” is leading “CBS Evening News” (678,000 and 461,000, respectively) by 414,000 Adults 25-54 and by 283,000 Adults 18-49.
For the week, “World News Tonight” (7.243 million, 990,000 and 677,000, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (4.334 million, 617,000 and 435,000, respectively) by 2.909 million Total Viewers, by 373,000 Adults 25-54 and by 242,000 Adults 18-49.
