Reason for Protest: The employees are demanding that Google withdraw from Project Nimbus. Project Nimbus is a cloud computing service provided to Israeli government agencies in partnership with Amazon.The contract for Project Nimbus is worth a staggering $1.2 billion. Controversy surrounding Nimbus has been ongoing since its announcement in 2021. Google employees, in particular, have consistently opposed this deal. The situation escalated further after the Hamas attack on October 7 and Israel’s subsequent military response against Gaza.
Previous Protests: In December, employees staged a “die-in” at one of Google’s offices in San Francisco. Earlier, a Google Cloud programmer who disrupted a tech conference to protest Nimbus was fired. Intra-company protests have intensified since then.
