NYC Radio: Personality Jim Kerr Celebrates 50-Year Milestone


iHeartMedia' WAXQ/Q104.3 is set to celebrate Jim Kerr's 50 years on the air with a week-long celebration. It kicks off with the annual Jim Kerr Irish Breakfast live broadcast on March 16 and culminates with a special Jim Kerr Rock & Roll Morning Show broadcast on March 22, live from the top of the Empire State Building.

According to his Radio Hall of Fame bio, all it took was a 2nd grade field trip to WWJ, Detroit for Jim Kerr to know what he wanted to do with his life. He began his career at age 14 in Ypsilanti, Michigan and has been on the air ever since. At 21, he became New York’s youngest morning show host at WPLJ. Kerr is now recognized as the longest running morning radio personality in NYC history.

Kerr adds: "50 years waking up New York? (New Jersey too!) How did that happen? It seems like I arrived here yesterday. (the actual date was March 18, 1974).


Kerr Celebrates 40-Years
Early Beginnings: Jim Kerr’s passion for radio ignited during a second-grade field trip to WWJ in Detroit. From that moment, he knew what he wanted to do with his life. At the tender age of 14, he embarked on his radio journey in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Stations and Milestones:

  • WORJ, Orlando: Kerr joined WORJ, a progressive rock station in Orlando, Florida.
  • WKNR, Detroit: Returning to his hometown, he became part of the airstaff at WKNR.
  • WDAI, Chicago: At just 19, he hosted the morning show at WDAI.
  • WLS, Chicago: By age 20, he was a prominent voice on the legendary WLS.
  • WPLJ, New York: At 21, Kerr became New York’s youngest morning show host at WPLJ.
  • WAXQ, New York: As of 2018, he has spent 15 years at WAXQ, making him the longest-running morning radio personality in NYC history.

Community Involvement: Beyond the mic, Kerr has actively participated in civic and charitable affairs. He served as a board member for HeartShare Human Services of New York for an impressive 32 years and contributed to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.


Jim Kerr’s voice has become synonymous with New York City mornings, and his impact extends far beyond the radio waves.
