9/18 WAKE-UP CALL: Why The UAW Is Demanding A 40% Pay Increase

It’s been a central argument for the United Auto Workers union: If Detroit’s three automakers raised CEO pay by 40% over the past four years, workers should get similar raises. AP News reports UAW President Shawn Fain has repeatedly cited the figure, contrasting it with the 6% pay raises autoworkers have received since their last contract in 2019. He opened negotiations with a demand for a similar 40% wage increase over four years, along with the return of pensions and cost of living increases. The UAW has since lowered its demand to a 36% wage increase but the two sides remain far apart in contract talks, triggering a strike. Fain’s focus on CEO pay is part of a growing trend of emboldened labor unions citing the wealth gap between workers and the top bosses to bolster demand for better pay and working conditions.

➤UKRAINE RECAPTURES SECOND TOWN FROM RUSSIANS: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Sunday his forces had recaptured an eastern village on the southern flank of Bakhmut, in what would be Ukraine's second significant gain in three days in its grueling counteroffensive against the Russian army. "Today I would like to particularly commend the soldiers who, step by step, are returning to Ukraine what belongs to it, namely in the area of Bakhmut," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address to the nation. The heavy fight for the Klishchiivka village, spread on higher grounds about 6 miles south of Bakhmut, has taken weeks and comes after Kyiv said on Friday it had gained control of a tiny nearby village of Andriivka. The gains have been among the most significant in Ukraine's counteroffensive, which began in June and has struggled to break through entrenched Russian lines.

➤SUPREME COURT GETS J/6 CHALLENGE: Three men involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol are asking the Supreme Court to wipe out part of their indictment − and the possibility of an extra 20 years in prison − in the first criminal cases involving the 2021 insurrection to reach the nation's highest court. If the justices agree to hear the appeals, the decisions could ultimately affect part of a federal indictment lodged against former President Donald Trump for his effort to overturn the 2020 election − as well as hundreds of others charged in the deadly riot that unfolded across the street from the Supreme Court more than two years ago. Edward Lang, Joseph Fischer and Garret Miller claim prosecutors overstepped their authority by charging them with a federal prohibition on obstructing “official proceedings,” a law approved in 2002 in response to the Enron financial meltdown. Lang documented on social media his participation in the Jan. 6 attack, and Miller gained attention after the riot for threatening Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.

➤HUNT CONTINUES FOR KILLER OF FORMER COP CHIEF: More than a month after retired California police chief Andreas Probst, 64, was fatally struck by a teenage driver, police are still working to track down his accomplice passenger. Probst was fatally struck by a 2016 Hyundai Elantra while cycling on a stretch of North Tenaya Way, near West Centennial Parkway in northwest Las Vegas. The 17-year-old driver, who has not been named due to his age, has been charged with murder. But his passenger who filmed the horrific incident and goaded him to strike Probst is still on the loose.

➤BIDEN'S BIG NYC JAM: Joe Biden's arrival in New York City caused traffic chaos Sunday night as he took his family for dinner at a swanky Italian restaurant frequented by celebs. The president's Air Force One touched down at JFK ahead of the UN General Assembly conference next week, where climate change, poverty and Russia's invasion of Ukraine will be top of the agenda. But his first stop was Il Cantinori, where he enjoyed a meal with several relatives. They were believed to have been toasting his granddaughter Finnegan's 23rd birthday. First Lady Jill Biden and their daughter Ashley Biden were spotted at the family outing - although Finnegan's father Hunter Biden, who faces three federal charges over his purchase of gun - was not pictured with them. Biden's downtown trip snarled traffic as police blocked roads in busy parts of Manhattan to clear the way for his motorcade to travel from the heliport to the fancy hotspot - where he received a standing ovation from patrons.

➤SENATE GOES CASUAL: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has quietly gotten rid of the dress code for members of the Senate in what's seen as a way of appealing to the often casually dressed John Fetterman. 'Senators are able to choose what they wear on the Senate floor. I will continue to wear a suit,' Schumer said. The change helps Fetterman, as well as lawmakers who are just getting in from an airport or the gym to allow them to vote. The Pennsylvania senator is known to wear casual clothing and gym shorts.

➤HOUSE REPUBLICANS RELEASE SHORT-TERM BILL TO AVERT GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN UNTIL OCT. 31: Key factions of the House Republican Conference reached a tentative agreement Sunday to keep the government funded temporarily and avert a shutdown scheduled for the end of the month, pairing it with a conservative border security measure, multiple GOP sources with knowledge of the agreement said. House Republicans released a bill after the far-right Freedom Caucus and the center-right Main Street Caucus reached a tentative agreement, the sources said. The deal, which would keep the government funded through Oct. 31 but includes cuts to domestic spending, is expected to pave the way to pass a defense spending bill this week that has been tied up in the standoff between Republican leadership and the far right.

➤F-35 JET REPORTED MISSING BY AUTHORITIES AFTER PILOT EJECTS DURING 'MISHAP: U.S. military officials are searching for a missing F-35 jet after a "mishap" caused its pilot to eject on Sunday afternoon. Joint Base Charleston said on Facebook that the aircraft was a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II belonging to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The pilot ejected safely and was transported to a local medical center. The base is working with Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort to help locate the missing aircraft. Emergency response teams have been deployed to find the jet.

➤BRAND FACES ALLEGATIONS: 'Several more women' have come forward to The Times in London with undisclosed allegations about Russell Brand's behavior during the early 2000s in wake of their joint investigation with Channel 4 in the UK which was published on Saturday, it has emerged. The latest allegations - which the newspaper says have not been investigated, but will now be 'rigorously checked' - follow accusations from four women (right), including one who claims she was sexually assaulted by Brand during a three-month relationship with him when she was 16 and still at school.

➤SUBWAY DEAL FACES SCRUTINY: Subway’s deal to sell itself for a whopping $9.6 billion could face more antitrust scrutiny than expected, sources said — and a major sticking point could be strict competitive rules the chain has placed on its own franchisees, The Post has learned. The struggling sandwich giant agreed last month to sell itself to Roark Capital, an Atlanta-based buyout firm headed by financier Neal Aronson that already owns a slew of other fast-food chains including Dunkin Brands, Arby’s, Sonic Drive-In, Schlotzky’s and Jimmy John’s. Combining all of those chains with Subway — a deal that’s expected to be vetted by the Federal Trade Commission — would create a sandwich-slinging colossus commanding more than 40,000 restaurants — three times the number of US locations as McDonald’s.

➤FORMER NFL PLAYER SERGIO BROWN IS MISSING AND HIS MOTHER HAS BEEN FOUND DEAD NEAR A CREEK IN A CHICAGO SUBURB: Former NFL player Sergio Brown is missing, and his mother was found dead Saturday near a creek in a Chicago suburb, according to police. Family of Brown and his mother, Myrtle, alerted police after they said they’d been unable to find or contact either of them, the Maywood Police Department said in a news release. “Maywood Police Officers initiated a missing person report and began making attempts to locate both individuals,” the news release read.

🏈NFL DOLPHINS 24 PATRIOTS 17:  The Miami Dolphins held on for a 24-17 win over the AFC East rival New England Patriots on "Sunday Night Football." While the Dolphins open the season 2-0 after two road victories, the Patriots start a season 0-2 for the first time since 2001. Of course, New England famously went on to win the Super Bowl that season behind a young and unheralded (at the time) quarterback named Tom Brady. Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert had a big game, rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

🏈NFL COWBOYS 30 JETS 10: As expected, the Dallas Cowboys had a rather rude welcome for Zach Wilson as they blasted the New York Jets, 30-10, at AT&T Stadium. Six days after Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles’ tendon, Wilson was under constant pressure from one of the NFL’s best defenses. He was intercepted three times, sacked three times and limited to a 1-for-10 success rate on third downs. Wilson, with a paltry 38.1 efficiency rating, collected 68 of his 170 passing yards from Garrett Wilson’s catch-and-run touchdown in the second quarter.

🏈AP COLLEGE POLL, ALABAMA DROPS: No. 13 Alabama is out of the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in eight years, and Georgia remained No. 1 on Sunday. Georgia received 57 first-place votes in the AP Top 25. Michigan held at No. 2 with two first-place votes. No. 3 Texas flipped spots with No. 4 Florida State. The Longhorns received three first-place votes and the Seminoles got one. After scraping by South Florida on Saturday, Alabama (2-1) saw its streak of consecutive AP poll appearances ranked in the top 10 snapped at 128. That was the second-longest such streak in the history of the poll behind Miami’s 137 from 1985-93. The Crimson Tide are out of the top 10 for the first time since Sept. 27, 2015. The Tide dropped out of the top 10 that September after losing at Mississippi but moved back in on Oct. 3 and went on to win a national championship.

With the Texas Rangers losing to the Cleveland Guardians, the Rays locked up their fifth consecutive playoff berth.
