Wake-Up Call: 7 Dead In Walmart Shooting

Daily Mail US Composite 11/23/22

Up to 7 people have been killed at a Walmart store in Chesapeake, Virginia, after a gunman - believed to be a manager - opened fire inside. According to those at the scene, one of the managers entered the break room and started shooting at those inside the Sam's Circle Walmart, located just off Battlefield Boulevard, at around 10.10pm on Tuesday night.

Police said they believe the gunman is dead. They also found multiple people people injured and dead when they arrived at the scene. The exact number of victims is not yet clear, but a Chesapeake Police Department spokesperson said that no more than 10 people have died in the mass shooting. There are also a number of people believed to be seriously hurt as over 40 emergency service vehicles swooped to the Walmart supercenter on Tuesday night.

One Walmart employee, standing outside the store after the horrific attack, revealed on social media: 'It was the manager. One of the managers.' Referring to the gunman, the staff member added: 'He blew his brains out and everything. He killed the girl in there and everything. He came in and started spraying. I'm sorry for the victims. I just left the break room, the manager come in there and started capping people up in there, started shooting. Sadly we lost a few of our associates.'

➤GAY CLUB SHOOTING SUSPECT IS NONBINARY:  The alleged gunman facing possible hate crime charges in the fatal shooting of five people at a Colorado Springs gay nightclub is nonbinary, the suspect’s defense team says in court filings, reports AP News.  In several standard motions filed on behalf of Anderson Lee Aldrich on Tuesday, public defenders refer to the suspect as “Mx. Aldrich,” noting in footnotes that Aldrich, 22, is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns. The motions deal with issues like unsealing documents and evidence gathering, not Aldrich’s identity and there was no elaboration about it.  Aldrich, who was beaten into submission by patrons during Saturday night’s shooting at Club Q, was scheduled to appear in court for the first time Wednesday by video from jail. The motive in the shooting was still under investigation, but authorities said Aldrich faces possible murder and hate crime charges.

➤SUPREME COURT SAYS TRUMP TAX RECORDS MUST GO TO DEMS: The Treasury Department had refused to provide the records during Trump's presidency. But the Biden administration said federal law is clear that the committee has the right to examine any taxpayer's return, including the president's. Lower courts agreed that the committee has broad authority to obtain tax returns and rejected Trump´s claims that it was overstepping and only wanted the documents so they could be made public. Chief Justice John Roberts imposed a temporary freeze on Nov. 1 to allow the court to weigh the legal issues raised by Trump's lawyers and the counter arguments of the administration and the House of Representatives.

➤KIM JONG UN'S SISTER WARNS U.S. OF A MORE FATAL SECURITY CRISIS: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's sister, Kim Yo Jong, warned the United States on Tuesday that it would face “a more fatal security crisis” as Washington pushes for U.N. condemnation of the North’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile test.  Jong, who is widely considered North Korea’s second most powerful person after her brother, criticized the United States for issuing what she called “a disgusting joint statement together with such rabbles as Britain, France, Australia, Japan and South Korea.” There are concerns that North Korea may soon conduct its first nuclear test in five years.

➤MIAMI MAN DRINKS BLEACH IN COURT AFTER JURY FINDS HIM GUILTY: After being found guilty of armed robbery, Jermaine Bell attempted to take his own life inside the courtroom by drinking bleach from a cup. Bell had been in custody for more than three years fighting the charges. After immediately becoming sick, he was taken out of the courtroom on a stretcher and taken to the hospital where he recovered. The matter is under investigation by Miami-Dade County Corrections and Miami-Dade police.

➤UKRAINIAN ENERGY SYSTEM ON BRINK OF COLLAPSE: After just six weeks of intense bombing of energy infrastructure, Russia has battered Ukraine to the brink of a humanitarian disaster this winter as millions of people potentially face life-threatening conditions without electricity, heat or running water. The Washington Post reports as the scope of damage to Ukraine’s energy systems has come into focus in recent days, Ukrainian and Western officials have begun sounding the alarm but are also realizing they have limited recourse. Ukraine’s Soviet-era power system cannot be fixed quickly or easily. In some of the worst-hit cities, there is little officials can do other than to urge residents to flee — raising the risk of economic collapse in Ukraine and a spillover refugee crisis in neighboring European countries.

“Put simply, this winter will be about survival,” Dr. Hans Henri P. Kluge, regional director for the World Health Organization, told reporters on Monday in Kyiv, saying the next months could be “life-threatening for millions of Ukrainians.”  Already, snow has fallen across much of Ukraine and temperatures are dipping below freezing in many parts of the country. Dr. Kluge said that 2 million to 3 million Ukrainians were expected to leave their homes “in search of warmth and safety,” though it was unclear how many would remain inside the country.

➤IRAN COMMANDER THREATENS TO KIDNAP AND ENSLAVE NETANYAHU: The Iranian regime’s commander of the Revolutionary Guards in the province of Isfahan said on Sunday that the theocratic state seeks to kidnap Benjamin Netanyahu and bring him to the Islamic Republic as a slave. ➤NEW STUDY FINDS INCREASED RISK OF DIABETES AFTER COVID ILLNESS: New research published in the journal BMC Medicine this month is shedding light on how COVID-19 can also put a person at greater risk of developing diabetes, both type 1 and type 2, after an infection. The study is a meta-analysis, which means that it combined and analyzed data from other studies on the same topic.  Nine studies, which included nearly 40 million participants, were included in the analysis. Overall, more than 4 million of the participants had contracted COVID-19 and more than 34 million in the control group had not. Altogether, following a COVID-19 infection, the incidence of developing diabetes was roughly 15 out of 1,000 people in a given year.

🦃HOW TO AVOID TALKING POLITICS OVER THANKSGIVING DINNER, IN 5 STEPS:  A recent poll found 20 percent of respondents said political disagreements have hurt their relationships with friends or family. So how do you avoid talking politics over the turkey? Experts have five tips: 1) reframe & redirect- see if you can get all family members to agree to not discuss politics during dinner to avoid misunderstandings. Instead, consider discussing what you’re grateful for, or other positive topics outside of politics; 2) keep calm and carry on- if someone brings up politics to get a reaction, a sociologist says the best thing you can do is remain calm; 3) don’t try to win- you’re unlikely to change someone’s political stance (just as you’re unlikely to change their favorite sports team)- so pump the breaks on the political conversation; 4) avoid labels and characterizations—don’t label parts of the conversation or the response (i.e., “I would expect a Boomer to say something like that.”) Experts say remaining neutral is key, even when confronted with what might seem like outrageous beliefs and viewpoints; and 5) be curious, not furious—the only way to navigate these difficult conversations is through a detached spirit of curiosity, where learning is more important than fixing.

Expectations [are] very high for participation and they are going to be larger groups… They’ll probably be demand for some of the larger birds as well, so it’s kind of getting back to normal pre-COVID, which is certainly a good thing for all of us.” Back in July, Butterball surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults about Thanksgiving, and at the time, 90 percent said they planned to celebrate, and 90 percent said they planned to buy the same size turkey or larger compared to last year. Just eight percent of those surveyed said they were concerned about the impact of inflation on costs. This all comes as the price of Thanksgiving overall is up 20 percent year-over-year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
