Content staffers at the Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting Corp. voted Thursday to form a union with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
Employees at WESA and WYEP, the stations operated by PCBC, voted 26-1 in favor of forming the union, the group said on Twitter.
“Pittsburgh is a union town, and we believe employees should have a say in our working conditions,” the organizing committee said in a press release. “We look forward to forming a representative bargaining committee and moving forward to ratifying our first contract.”
“With the backing of a union, PCBC employees can create a career path that allows for growth, advancement and longevity. It allows us to better invest in, not only our work, but the community we serve,” Rosemary Welsch, a WYEP host, said in the release.
The staffers announced in August their intention to form a union, citing concerns about transparency, wages and workplace culture in their petition to management.
“We believe we should have meaningful input into our role in the station’s future, and this is best accomplished through a formal collective-bargaining process,” the staffers said in the petition.
