TV Ratings: Football's Return Dominates

Monday’s 2022 Emmys, hosted by “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson, drew a 1.09 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 5.9 million total viewers on NBC, according to Nielsen averages. Those are new record lows for the annual best-of-TV special.

On broadcast television alone, the show nose-dove 42 percent from the previous year’s key-demo ratings. Its overall viewership declined 25 percent from 2021.

A little more Emmys-ratings history: The 2020 show suffered the prior all-time low of a 1.3 rating and 6.4 million total viewers on ABC — although that was not so bad, considering the Covid pandemic was in full swing.

In 2019, the Emmy Awards hit what was record lows at the time with a 1.7 rating and 6.9 million viewers on Fox. That year, the last “normal” one before COVID-19 came stateside, Nielsen numbers were down significantly from the last time NBC hosted the Emmys: 2018’s (Monday) telecast received a 2.4 rating and 10.2 million viewers.

The highest-rated Emmys on record were in 1992 on Fox, when the show scored a 9.8 rating among adults 18-49. That one was hosted by Tim Allen, Kirstie Alley, and Dennis Miller; CBS series “Murphy Brown” and “Northern Exposure” were the big winners back then.

The most-watched Emmy Awards were in 2000 on ABC, when 21.8 million viewers tuned in. That show was hosted Gary Shandling; the top awards went to NBC’s “Will & Grace” and “The West Wing.”

Meanwhile,  Monday Night Football's viewership was 236% greater than the Emmys on NBC at the same time. The ESPN, ABC, ESPN2, ESPN+ and ESPN Deportes broadcast game has proven to be the third-most-watched MNF since 2009. The Seahawks’ win over Denver and Wilson also was the fourth-most-viewed NFL regular season game ever on ESPN.

📺BROADCAST EVENING NEWS

According to TV Newser citing live-plus-same-day data from Nielsen, ABC World News Tonight with David Muir averaged 7.35 million total viewers and 1.26 million adults 25-54 for the week of Sept. 5, which began on Labor Day. ABC’s evening newscast has now defeated its competition from NBC and CBS 197 of the past 198 weeks in average total viewers—and 126 of the last 128 weeks among adults 25-54.

Muir kicked off the week with an exclusive interview with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, and anchored special editions of World News Tonight from the region Monday through Wednesday, Sept. 7. Muir also anchored the program from London on Friday, following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

Although ABC World News Tonight remains the standard as far as evening news goes, its 21-week streak as the most-watched non-sports program on U.S. TV ended this past week.

NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt had a very solid ratings week, giving World News Tonight a run for its money in the A25-54 demo with its largest audience in 21 weeks (1.13 million viewers). That’s up +15% from what the newscast drew the prior week from the demo.   The CBS Evening News with Norah O’Donnell averaged 4.45 million total viewers—and 713,000 adults 25-54. That’s +5% when it comes to total viewers—and +3% in adults 25-54 from the previous week. On the downside, Evening News is also -4% in total viewers—and -16% among adults 25-54 vs. the comparable week in 2021.

Fox News marked 36 consecutive weeks as the most-watched network on all of basic cable (not just cable news) in the 24-hour daypart—and 82 consecutive weeks as the most-watched cable news network with its Nielsen ratings performance during the week of Sept. 5, which started on the Labor Day holiday.

According to TV Newser citing live plus same day data from Nielsen, in total day (6 a.m.-6 a.m.), Fox News averaged 1.39 million total day viewers, down -2% from the prior week (Aug. 29, 2022), and 204,000 adults 25-54, down -1% from the prior week.

Fox News remained No. 2 in primetime cable behind ESPN, which continues to grab large audiences with its college football coverage. Expect to see another top ranking for The Worldwide Leader in Sports this coming week now that Monday Night Football is back in primetime.

FNC averaged 2.02 million total viewers in primetime this past week, -6% from the prior week. In the adults 25-54 demo, the network ranked No. 3 on basic cable in primetime, behind ESPN (967,000) and ESPN2 (283,000) averaging 271,000 viewers from the measurement, which is -5% from the week prior.

Still, those numbers far exceed those of Fox’s main cable news rivals. FNC averaged more total viewers than CNN and MSNBC combined this past week. Fox News also posted 82 of the 100 most-watched cable news telecasts for the week.

In terms of individual programming, The Five was the most-watched cable news show for the third consecutive week. The news talk panel program averaged 3.24 million total viewers during the week of Sept. 5, down from the prior week. Tucker Carlson Tonight took second place in total viewers (3.05 million at 8 p.m.), Jesse Watters Primetime (2.705 million at 7 p.m.), Hannity (2.52 million at 9 p.m.) and Special Report with Bret Baier (2.36 million viewers at 6 p.m.) round out the top five.
