TV Ratings: Tiger Scores For CBS, ESPN

Tiger Woods may not have won the Masters golf tournament, but his stirring return from injury was certainly a winner for the television networks following him.

CBS’ final round coverage of the venerable tourney on Sunday averaged 10.17 million viewers, the highest for any golf telecast since the corresponding day in 2019 — the last time Woods won the coveted green jacket, the Associated Press report citing Nielsen data.

ESPN’s coverage of the first two rounds of the Masters averaged 3.3 million viewers, the most for its Master’s coverage since 2018, the network said.  ESPN’s viewership peaked at 4.6 million just as Woods was finishing up his second round on Saturday, Nielsen said.

CBS led the broadcast networks last week in prime time, averaging 4.2 million viewers. ABC had 3.6 million, NBC had 3 million, Fox had 1.7 million, Univision had 1.4 million, Ion Television had 1 million and Telemundo had 860,000.

TV Newser reports ABC’s evening newscast has now defeated its competition from NBC and CBS 175 of the past 176 weeks in average total viewers—and 104 of the last 106 weeks among adults 25-54.

Despite the significant margin of victory in the key A25-54 demo, World News Tonight lost -8% in the measurement from the previous week (March 28, 2022), and -13% from the same week in 2021 (April 5).  The Muir-led newscast lost -5% in average total audience from the previous week and -3% from the year-ago week.

📺LATE NIGHT TV

📺CABLE TV

Fox News Channel led among the cable networks, averaging 2.32 million viewers. TBS had 1.52 million, TNT had 1.2 million, HGTV had 1.17 million and ESPN had 1.13 million.

Fox continues to dominate basic cable in total viewers and its cable news competition in all relevant measurements, according to TV Newser.

MSNBC fell to No. 6 on cable in total primetime viewers, averaging one million in the daypart this past week. While one million may sound like a lot, it’s actually the network’s smallest primetime audience during a non-holiday week since Dec. 2016, and -11% from the previous week. The network also averaged 660,000 total day viewers,  No. 2 on basic cable and -5% from the prior week. While the story remains relatively good for MSNBC in total viewers, it continues to worsen in the A25-54 demo.  As TV news’ focus on Ukraine slowly begins to subside, CNN, which has benefited more from its coverage of the war in Ukraine than any other network, is beginning to see its ratings return to early Q1 levels.
