Katie Couric admits in her new memoir that she edited out comments made by late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in which the liberal icon was critical of then-NFL player Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem before games in protest of racial injustice and police brutality.
The former Today show host makes the admission in her upcoming memoir, Going There, writing that she edited Ginsburg's comments out of the 2016 interview to, quote, "protect" the elderly justice, writing they were, quote, "unworthy of a crusader for equality."
Ginsburg reportedly said during the interview that people who kneel during the anthem are showing, quote, "contempt for a government that has made it possible for their parents and grandparents to live a decent life."
Couric writes that after the interview, the head of public affairs for the Supreme Court emailed her and asked that Ginsburg's comments be removed because she had "misspoken."
The final story included Ginsburg saying the kneeling is "dumb and disrespectful," but left out the additional comments.
Couric says she thought the then 83-year-old Ginsburg was, quote, "elderly and probably didn't fully understand the question."
