KIRO 97.3 FM host Dori Monson is back on the air following an almost three-week suspension from Bonneville Seattle after he made a transphobic tweet during the Oct. 7 gubernatorial debate.
According to seattlepi.com, Monson revealed the news and issued an apology in a post on MyNorthwest.com. He also apologized on Oct. 8 during his radio show for the way people took his comment, saying he didn't intend for the tweet to be received like that.
The tweet, now deleted, said: "The state where I could go to Olympia tomorrow and change my birth (certificate) to say I was a girl on 10/2/61.” Monson finished the tweet with "HAHAHAHAHA.
The remark was made, Monson said in response to the initial backlash, to attempt to point out hypocrisy as Gov. Jay Inslee said Washington was a "science-oriented" state during his debate with Republican challenger Loren Culp.
Monson has insisted he didn't mean for the tweet to come off as transphobic, saying both on the radio and in the My Northwest post that he couldn't care less if an adult wants to change genders, that he was "commenting on our governor and changing official state documents."

Monson said Bonneville Seattle and KIRO Radio requested he take time away from the microphone following the tweet. The weekend afterward, he was replaced for the usual shows before and after Seahawks games with Jen Mueller. He did not specify in his statement whether he would return to host the 'Hawks gameday coverage.
Since 2002, Monson had been affiliated with the Seahawks hosting the pregame and postgame shows on KIRO Radio 97.3, and recording a weekly show with head coach Pete Carroll. He also hosts a daily show.
