Syracuse Radio: WTLA ESPN Sports Drops Most Local Shows
The lack of sports being played, both nationally and locally, due to the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in several Syracuse sports radio shows going off the airwaves.
According to a syracuse.com, WTLA ESPN Radio Syracuse has removed most of its local sports talk shows as a result of the coronavirus’ impact on the sports landscape. ESPN Radio broadcasts locally on 97.7 and 100.1 FM.
The shutdown includes local programming that aired from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The local ESPN Syracuse lineup starts after the nationally-syndicated Golic & Wingo Show, beginning at 10 a.m. with “Centers of Attention.” The show’s first hour features host Seth Everett and former Syracuse center Danny Schayes and then continues in the 11 a.m. to noon hour with Paulie Scibilia and former SU centers Etan Thomas and Roosevelt Bouie.
The “Orange Nation” show aired from noon to 2 p.m. with co-hosts Steve Infanti and Seth Goldberg. That was followed from 2-3 p.m. with “Voice of the Orange” Matt Park and Brian Higgins.
Two local programs will remain on the air.
The “SportsZila Show,” which is based out of Utica and features hosts Scoop and Rain, will broadcast from 3-4 p.m.
“On the Block” with host Brent Axe will continue to air from 4-6 p.m. Axe said he thinks his listeners will still tune into his show because they will need a break from the constant coronavirus coverage.
"So many people are having to stay home from work or school or college, and they still want to be entertained and take their minds off this,'' Axe said. "While still keeping them updated on all this, I can serve as a distraction."
