U-S Marking 18th Anniversary of 9/11 Attacks
The nation will be marking the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks today, carrying out what have become annual traditions at the sites of the attacks in which nearly 3,000 people were killed.
President Trump will hold a moment of silence at the White House and join an observance at the Pentagon, the second attack site.
Vice President Mike Pence will speak near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the final plane went down in a field.
George W. Bush, who was president at the time of the attacks, will take part in an afternoon wreath-laying at the Pentagon.
In New York, the annual reading of the names of all those who died will take place starting at 8:39 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial, with attendance only open to victims’ families. There will be six moments of silence during the ceremony: two for the moment the planes struck each tower of the World Trade Center, two for the times each tower fell, one for the moment the Pentagon was hit and another for the moment United Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.
