Country Artist Luke Combs Ties Johnny Cash Record
Just a week after being invited to be the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry, Luke Combs continues to break records by charting five tracks from his new EP, The Prequel, on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Top 25—a feat not accomplished by any artist in since Johnny Cash in 1959. The tracks are also in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Country Songs Sales chart.
Additionally, Combs has achieved the largest streaming week ever for a country artist and currently holds the top two spots on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart with The Prequel (No. 1) and his debut album, This One’s For You (No. 2).
Produced by Scott Moffatt, The Prequel features five songs co-written by Combs including lead single, “Beer Never Broke My Heart” which debuted at No. 2 on Billboard’s Country Streaming Songs chart with 11 million streams—setting the record for the best first week of streaming ever for a country song. It also recently set the record for most adds on the Mediabase/Country Aircheck chart with 149 adds and debuted at No. 15 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart—the top entrance by any artist since September 2012 and Combs’ highest debut to date.
Here's a complete rundown, courtesy of Billboard:
Luke Combs on Hot Country Songs, June 22, 2019
No. 3, "Beer Never Broke My Heart"
No. 12, "Even Though I'm Leaving"
No. 19, "Lovin' On You"
No. 20, "Refrigerator Door"
No. 21, "Moon Over Mexico"
Since Billboard's Hot Country Songs began as an all-encompassing genre songs tally in October 1958 (today, it blends streaming, airplay and sales data), the iconic Cash is the only other act to have charted five songs in the top 25 simultaneously. Cash did so for three weeks, on charts dated May 11, 18 and 25, 1959. Here's how the songs ranked in the last of those frames:
Johnny Cash on Hot Country Songs, May 25, 1959
No. 8, "Luther Played the Boogie"
No. 11, "Frankie's Man, Johnny"
No. 14, "You Dreamer You"
No. 15, "Thanks a Lot"
No. 20, "Don't Take Your Guns to Town"
