Philly Radio: TSOP Comes To WPPZ

Radio One announced the launch of WPPZ Classix 107.9 this week. Previously known as gospel station Praise 107.9, Classix has adopted a classic R&B sound, reaching to the soulful hits of the of the 1970s and ’80s.

With its launch, Classix 107.9 is attempting to centralize “The Sound of Philadelphia," by featuring Philly favorites like Patti LaBelle, Gamble and Huff, and Teddy Pendergrass, as well as artist such as Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Prince, and Michael Jackson.

“Philadelphia’s cluster of stations will now have Boom 103.9 targeting those 34 and under, 100.3 WRNB for adults 25-54, and Classix 107.9 for those 35 and older," said Ezio Torres, Radio One Philadelphia’s station manager.

According to philly.com, the station declined to comment on whether any of the talent was laid off, although many of their on-air personalities were syndicated nationally through other Radio One stations.

“I’m still employed by Radio One," said Jones, who hosted a morning show on Praise 107.9. "I’m working on the sister station 100.3 WRNB [during the Quincy Harris morning show for the rest of the week] and my show will be back soon,” he continued. “I’m sad like everyone else, but grateful that I’m still there.”

The Praise 107.9 audience will still be able to listen to gospel programming via praisephilly.com, the Praise Philly app, and with the home entertainment device, Alexa, on 107.9 HD2.
