Richmond Radio: WJSR Flips To JackFM, Bill & Shelly Gone

Richmond radio personalities Bill Bevins and Shelly Perkins, the duo behind the popular former WJSR Star 100.9 morning show, are no longer on the air, according to messages on their Facebook pages Wednesday.

Additionally, the station, owned by SummitMedia LLC, has been changed to “100.9 Jack FM — Playing What We Want” on WJSR, effective 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.

“As a lot of you have discovered I am no longer on the radio.... my goodbye at the job was respectful and as good as can be under the circumstances,” Bevins’ page said.

“For sure this has been an interesting 24 hours!,” Perkins wrote on her page. “Now that the announcement has been officially made, I will confirm that I am no longer broadcasting. While this was not my decision, I want you to know that I was treated with kindness and respect when I was let go.”

“100.9 Jack FM — Playing What We Want” features “nearly 1,000 different titles from four decades and multiple musical genres,” according to a written statement Wednesday.

“SummitMedia is excited to bring 100.9 JACK FM to Richmond,” Richmond market President Bob Willoughby said in the written statement. “A station with this much variety is going to gain a great deal of attention and make a lot of listeners very happy.”

By phone Wednesday, Willoughby confirmed that Perkins and Bevins were told about their status Tuesday.

“Days like today are exciting because we’re starting something new,” he said, referring to Wednesday’s format changes. “However, days like yesterday are difficult because you’re saying goodbye to really good people.”

According to richmond.com, he continued by saying that “Bill and Shelly are outstanding individuals and broadcasters who’ve served Richmond over many years ... we wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors.”

Bevins and Perkins started with Star 100.9 in the summer of 2014 after resigning from “Lite 98” — a Clear Channel Soft AC WTVR-FM station — after 13 years.
