MLB Tigers broadcasters Rod Allen and Mario Impemba will sit out the rest of the season after getting into a violent altercation at Tuesday's game against the White Sox.
Fox Sports Detroit announced Friday that the pair, who have worked together on Tigers television broadcasts since 2003, will not be scheduled for any games the rest of this season.
The incident occurred at some point during or after Tuesday night's game. According to WDIV in Detroit, Impemba left the broadcast booth and Allen followed, "assaulting Impemba from behind and choking him." WDIV cited unidentified sources saying the two had a dispute about a chair in the broadcast booth.
After speaking with all involved parties, FOX Sports Detroit has decided not to schedule Rod Allen and Mario Impemba for any future Tigers telecasts this season. Since this is an internal matter, we will have no further comment.— FOX Sports Detroit (@FOXSportsDet) September 7, 2018
Allen's agent, Tom Shaer, released a statement to WDIV disputing that characterization of the incident: "Nobody followed anybody, there was no contact from behind, and a "choke hold" is a shamefully untrue way to describe anything which occurred in that very brief altercation," the statement read in part.
Greg Gania, longtime radio announcer for the Double-A Erie Seawolves, will handle broadcast duties for the Detroit Tigers radio network. He's filling in for regular play-by-play man Dan Dickerson, who shifts to television duties.
