Bay Area Radio: Sports Talker Gary Radnich Stepping Away From TV

Gary Radnich, the undisputed king of the sports airwaves in the Bay Area for the last three decades, announced his retirement from television on Tuesday, according to The Mercury News.

Radnich, who rose to Bay Area fame throughout his 34-year career at KRON4 News with his good-natured, rarely serious, off-the-cuff observations, indicated his last TV segment will be around Sept. 1.

The 68-year-old has hosted one of the nation’s top-rated sports shows on the radio at KNBR 680 AM for the past 24 years. He gave no indications he’d be stepping away from his radio show, for which he was inducted into the Bay Area Sports Radio Hall of Fame in 2010.

Radnich’s TV show has also been a long-time hit with fans. Three times the Associated Press has named his KRON segment the “Best Sportscast in California.”

Before joining KRON4 in 1985, Radnich was the sports director at WBNS-TV in Columbus, Ohio. He was also the play-by-play announcer for Ohio State’s football broadcasts during that time.
