NYC Radio: WEPN's Michael Kay Honored With Vin Scully Award
Michael Kay will receive the Vin Scully Award for excellence in sports broadcasting from WFUV Radio.
The station based at Fordham University made the announcement on Wednesday. Ted Koppel will receive the Charles Osgood Award for excellence in broadcast journalism.
The 90-year-old Scully surprised Kay with the news as a guest on his radio show in New York. The awards will be presented on Nov. 7 at the Fordham School of Law.
"I don't mean to interrupt your conversation about basketball," said Scully, calling from the West Coast. "But you know there is a Vin Scully lifetime achievement award. From all of us, welcome to the club and congratulations."
Kay enters his 28th year as a New York Yankees announcer and is the first Fordham alumnus to receive the award.
"I am beyond honored and I'm humbled," Kay said. "It's one of the great moments of my life."
Scully started his Hall of Fame broadcast career at WFUV. He retired in 2016 after his 67th season as the "voice of the Dodgers."
On the eve of the baseball season, Scully told Kay he's "enjoying every minute" of retirement and the word to best describe him is "content."
