Detroit Radio: N/T WJR To Add Guy Gordon Fulltime

Guy Gordon
WDIV-TV4 reporter and fill-anchor Guy Gordon is leaving the station to host his own radio show on WJR 760 AM.

According to The Detroit News, he'll join WJR in January to host a new afternoon talk show from 3-5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

But Gordon may not completely disappear from WDIV.

"We hope to have a further relationship with the TV station; we’re exploring ways for me to continue contributing," he said.

Gordon, 58, has filled in for WJR host Paul W. Smith for the past two years.

"It has been so much fun, and Paul has been such a gracious guy to allow me to test the waters," Gordon said.

The WJR team has been phenomenal to work with, he said, giving him confidence about the move. “It was just something that just kind of evolved. We just saw this great fit when I filled in."

While deferring to WJR for more specifics on the daily talk show's format, Gordon said he views it "as a two-hour feast for carnivores. I expect it to be meaty, tasty, satisfying. We’re going to go beyond the sound bite.”

WJR 760 AM (50 Kw)
Bringing Gordon on board is the second move WJR has made recently in local programming after years of dis-investing in local programming, said Matt Friedman, a media observer and co-founder of Tanner Friedman public relations firm.

WJR also added the Detroit Lions broadcasts this season and appears to be bucking the trend toward more syndicated and paid programming, Friedman said.

"From a business standpoint, this is potentially very big news for (WJR.) There are not many places for advertisers to be if they want to be on local talk shows," he said.
