WEDO-AM Sells For A Bargain Price

PA RADIO -- McKeesport's WEDO 810 AM has been sold and in December may go full-time on Irwin-licensed low-power FM 92.3.

“We decided it would be a good investment to add another station to our cluster (in North Versailles),” Broadcast Communications Inc. owner Robert Stevens said Tuesday.

According to tribline.com, an application received Tuesday by the Federal Communications Commission said Stevens is buying the nearly 70-year-old radio station for $175,000.  The station was put on the block in 2009, asking price was $1.75M.

Stevens anticipates the closing will occur in December.

“We are going to continue to provide an outlet for clients who currently buy time on WEDO,” Stevens said.

That may include religious programming, ethnic shows such as “Radio Italia” and “Echoes of Erin,” and medical programs.  Others buying time include Port Vue's Mike and Candy Long, who play oldies from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.

Stevens said he plans to team up AM 810 with W222CB FM 92.3, now silent but licensed to Irwin to make WEDO a full-time station.

WEDO airs with 1,000 watts from a North Versailles tower but the FCC requires it to sign off at night to protect 50,000-watt WGY in Schenectady, N.Y.

Stevens said he plans to consolidate programs now airing on WEDO and WKFB-770 AM / W248AR 97.5.

Stevens said the purchase will “create more of the opportunity for 770 and 97.5 to be a local Westmoreland County station with an appropriate musical format which we haven't determined as yet.”
