Radio Host Bob Edwards Leaving SiriusXM

Veteran radio host Bob Edwards announced Monday on his Facebook page that he would be ending both his weekday Sirius XM Satellite Radio show and his weekend show on public radio after the end of September, according to indersiderlousville.com.

Edwards hosted National Public Radio’s “Morning Edition” for 24-and-a-half years, attracting more than 13 million listeners weekly. Before that he was a co-host of NPR’s “All Things Considered.”

When he was removed as host of “Morning Edition” and reassigned to a correspondent’s position, the move was widely criticized. He stayed in that position only briefly before moving on to Sirius in 2004.

According to Julia Yager, senior vice president of marketing at PRI, which distributed his weekend show, PRI informed their stations last week. She said Edwards let them know he was “interested in pursuing other options,” including podcasting. She said that she was excited to have been able to work with him.

When Edwards won a Peabody Award for “Morning Edition” in 1999, the committee said he was “a man who embodies the essence of excellence in radio. His reassuring and authoritative voice is often the first many Americans hear each day. His is a rare radio voice: informed but never smug; intimate but never intrusive; opinionated but never dismissive. Mr. Edwards does not merely talk, he listens.”

He has also been inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and won an Edward R. Murrow Award for outstanding contributions to public radio.
