CBS Radio Names Scott Herman COO

Scott Herman
Scott Herman has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer, CBS RADIO, it was announced today by Andre Fernandez, President, CBS RADIO.  In his new role, Herman will continue to report to Fernandez and lead local operations across the Division’s 117 major market stations.  CBS RADIO’s market managers will now report to Herman.

The appointment is effective immediately.

“Scott has a tremendous reputation in the industry, and is a distinguished representative for radio,” said Fernandez.  “He understands CBS RADIO’s vision for the future and will provide strength to our senior leadership team as we move forward with a variety of key growth initiatives.  Having someone with Scott’s experience collaborating directly with our station management will result in new value for CBS RADIO and our partners.”

Herman most recently was Executive Vice President, Operations, a position he has held since November 2007, and CBS RADIO New York Market Manager for the past year.  He works particularly close with the Division’s news and talk stations, and his expertise in this area has allowed CBS RADIO to retain its leadership position in the format.

“I’m thrilled to be taking on this expanded role at a time of incredible opportunity for CBS RADIO,” said Herman.  “We have an outstanding portfolio of local market assets, and I look forward to working with station management in the evolution of their brands.”

Herman’s first corporate appointment for CBS RADIO was in 2003 when he was named Executive Vice President, Eastern Region.  Before that, he was Senior Vice President, Market Manager for the division’s New York properties including the venerable AM stations 1010 WINS, WCBS 880 and WFAN.  Herman was Vice President and General Manager of 1010 WINS, America’s first All-News radio station, from 1994-2003, and WNEW-FM on two different occasions during the 90s.

In 1997, Herman also served as Senior Vice President, News for CBS Radio News. In that role he was responsible for CBS News’ radio operation and its relationship with 500 plus affiliated stations nationwide.

During his nearly 40-year broadcasting career, Herman has also worked as Director of News Programming for KYW-TV and KYW-AM in Philadelphia (1992-93); News Director of KYW-TV (NBC), Philadelphia (1990-92); Program Director of WMAQ-AM in Chicago (1988-90) and Program Director at KYW-AM in Philadelphia (1985-88). He began his career at 1010 WINS in 1978 and then ascended through the ranks serving as Unit Manager in 1981, Assistant News Director in 1982 and News Director from 1983-85.

Herman is currently an active Board Member of the Radio Advertising Bureau (RAB), having held the position of Chairman prior. Additionally, he is also a Board Member of the International Radio and Television Society Foundation, National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), The Broadcasters Foundation of America, and iBiquity Digital Corporation. Previously, Herman was President of the Associated Press National Broadcasting Advisory Board, and Chairman of the New York Market Radio Association.

In May 2011, Herman received an Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations (NECO), and Radio Ink magazine has named Herman one of the 40 Most Powerful People in Radio every year since 2008.

He is a graduate of Brooklyn College of The City University of New York with a degree in television and radio and he was recently elected to its Board of Trustees. Herman also was named “Alumnus of the Year” in 2002.
