Report: Americans Working More
Americans put in more hours at work last year. They also managed to find more time to sleep and watch television, reports The Wall Street Journal.
For employed Americans, work took up an average of seven hours, 45 minutes per workday in 2014, up 10 minutes from 2013, according to the Labor Department’s latest American Time Use Survey report. Women saw a larger jump in time on the job than did men.
The portrait of the average American day released Wednesday is based on the civilian population 15 years and older, including the employed and those without jobs, across weekdays and weekends.
In that broad view, work and work-related activities for all Americans averaged three hours, 35 minutes a day last year, an increase of seven minutes from 2013. That was the most time spent on work since the recession year of 2008, when Americans worked an average of three hours, 44 minutes.
