Boston Radio: Greater Media Expands Use of Video

The Buggles once said that video killed the radio star but Peter Smyth thinks the opposite is true, according to Jon Chesto at the Boston Business Journal.

The CEO of radio station operator Greater Media sees video as an increasingly important part of his business. Smyth says that his Braintree-based company strengthened its online presence after it converted an on-air studio into a video studio at its complex in Dorchester. A spokeswoman says the video studio opened in 2013, and that the company makes about 40 videos a month there, with about half of them shot at events and half shot in the studio.



The company’s rock station WBOS Radio 92.9 and Country WKLB 102.5 FM, in particular, have made use of the new studio.

Now, it will be WBQT Hot 96.9’s turn. Smyth tells me that videos featuring the new pop-music radio station’s staff and guests will start appearing on the station’s website within the next 90 days.

Hot 96.9 became the local radio scene’s biggest success story last year. Smyth decided to shut down WTKK, a talk station at 96.9 FM, after a protracted ratings slump, and convert the signal to a music station roughly a year ago. Program director “Cadillac” Jack McCartney then assembled a team of well-known personalities for the station, such as the eponymous hosts of the Baltazar & Pebbles morning show.
