In the summer of 2012, Carla Leonardo, the popular weekend
and fill-in host at WDRV 97.1 FM The Drive, had to take a personal leave of absence
from the station to deal with a health issue. That issue was her battle with
acute myeloid leukemia. After over a year of fiercely fighting the disease,
Carla Leonardo passed away on Saturday.
She was 63 years old, according to CRM.
Earlier this year, Carla Leonardo was feeling stronger,
hopeful the worst of her ordeal was behind her. However, this past September,
Carla Leonardo's cancer had returned. (See original posting, Click Here.)
Carla Leonardo's slightly raspy, but always cheerful voice
had been warming the hearts and ears of classic rock fans on The Drive for well
over a decade. She has been with WDRV-FM since June 2001, working mainly as a
weekend and fill-in personality.
That great radio voice had been heard on Chicago 's airwaves even longer. The Chicago native also had
stints on WLUP-FM (late 1970s to mid-1980s) and WKQX-FM (mid-1980s to
mid-1990s). In fact, it was Carla Leonardo who kicked off WKQX-FM's famed
Alternative era of Q101, by being the first DJ on the air and playing the track
"Friday I'm in Love" by the Cure.
