The National Hispanic Media Coalition has petitioned the FCC
to deny the license renewal application of Clear Channel Communications, Inc.,
to operate KFI 640 AM in Los Angeles .
NHMC claims it has documented a pattern of abuse that KFI
and its on-air personalities have perpetrated
for years. It asserts KFI has regularly used its broadcast license to demonize
and degrade with hate speech targeting people of color, immigrants, LGBT
people, and women has regularly emanated from KFI and caused outrage among the
local community.
In addition to targeting entire populations of people, the
coalition says KFI hosts have a history of issuing dangerous calls to action against
individual citizens within in the local market, resulting in harassment and death threats when personal
information and telephone numbers are broadcast.
The Coalition claims to have 'extensive research' into KFI’s programming, and hate speech that has revealed the propensity for distorted, false, and misleading broadcasts,
and examined the physical and psychological harms that such broadcasts inflict on the
local community.
The group is asking the FCC to deny KFI’s license renewal application or, alternatively, designated for hearing.
